Basically going to see the stone roses on the saturday.

Is it possible to get back on the same night using the train?

If not is there much entertainment going on? I've heard it's fairly dead.

And what time does the first train leave from chelmsford to london in the morning?

It depends on where exactly you are looking to go. The music comes to an end at 11pm, and trains do usually run a little past this time. Getting to the station might be an issue, from the festival.

But of course you can look at the exact times on http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ and double check closer the time, as the timings might change of the train!
