mrtourette
No , but they need to put bums on seats - Whether R&L get them or not , or whether they headline or sub I am sure they will be on their radar as a possible for 2013 , There were quite a few comments last year about Flornence until Neil did the sums and posted how many she had shifted for her spring tour. ivan
You could make the arguement that Florence, Libertines & Bloc Party were bigger draws than Kasabian, Arcade Fire & Radiohead who played after them. Making that argument is easy , putting it into practice is different - Which booker would have Radiohead subbing to Bloc Party etc ? and Florence was never gone headline over Kasabian

ivan
There's two different arguments there though - whether people are happy with them playing and whether people think they deserve to play in a particular slot. Neil pointing out that Florence deserved to sub due to her ticket sales didn't really stop people complaining as people still didn't want her to play whether she subbed or not. I don't recall many people saying that she wasn't big enough to sub, just that they didn't want her at R&L. I think it was the Bestival lot who doubted that she was big enough to headline there. mrtourette
Yes , but whether you like Florence or not , she was not going to play the Radio 1 Stage before The Hives. She knows her worth ! Edited October 2, 2012 by mrtourette

ivan
I never said Mumford were unlikely to play or unwanted but that's very different from bumping them up to headliners. But as Mumford and Sons are now selling out arenas , they are going to want to headline or sub under someone they admire/ appreicate - i cannot see em accepting anything less

ivan
Biffy & Bloc are both bands that have said they want to headline R&L but it doesn't mean they will automaticly and lots of bands sell out arenas yet still sub.
jump
I think Bloc Party will headline Radio 1 tent next year !
ivan
They wont, far too big and popular at R&L.
jump
I cannot see em accepting another sub headliner slot - how many would that be ? , I can't seem em getting a main stage healdine slot either !!

jump
By what criteria? Album sales? Venues they play?
ivan
My formula is R&L has lots of Bloc Party fans and those Bloc Party fans can't all fit into the tent.
jump
A lot of those fans may not be going to R & L anymore ! And a lot may have been waiting for Radiohead to come on last time they played !
ivan
It would be the 3rd time but it doesn't change that they are far too big to play in the tent. You are working on the basis that must be playing next year when they actually might not be at all.
jump
In an earlier post you said that they wanted to headline ? , They may not be playing next year , but as they have booked dates for 2013 and have a new album out I cannot see em stretching it to 2014 so nextyear would be a likely fit. And a the R1 tent as a headliner is about right with them at the mo !

ivan
By headline I mean headline mainstage and the tent is too small for them to play in. Just because an act is a fan of the fest it doesn't mean they have to play, Foos for example took ages to come back and play again.
LondonTom
Imagine for a moment that if it's possible that it's AC/DC too - then talk about a varied line-up, that's what you call all ends of the musical spectrum!
Luke Routledge
I think Bloc Party could headline the NME, there seems to be a theme with reformed bands headlining the NME tent. Janes Addiction, At The Drive In, Faith No More. I know they haven't been gone long enough to fit with those bands but a reunion none the less. Plus I think people have lost interest.
