Bestival 2013

Just curious -- what do you all think Bestival's price range is for the headliners (or the third headliner in this case).

I live in Phoenix (I work about a mile from the venue Prince is playing at); the venue holds about 1500 people, he's doing four shows, and the tickets are going for $275, which means the stop in Phoenix will gross him about $1.6 million. The other venues he's doing are of similar size with similar price points.

So I guess I'm curious--is $1.5 million out of Bestival's price range? Or is it just too much with Snoop and Elton?

Kraftwerk's current 3D show is probably quite a bit more expensive to stage than when they headlined Bestival in 2009.

I'm under the impression Bestival pay around £300,000 for their headliners, but it can be much, much less (*cough*New Order*cough*).

I can't believe the US ticket price quoted above for Prince. When he played the O2 Arena (2007?) tickets were only £31 each.

I'm having trouble figuring out where Snoop might come on the scale of cheap to expensive. He plays here a fair bit, he's not a Bestival exclusive, and he's often only 3rd on the bill at festivals which have more money to throw around... but he is super-famous and the whole Snoop Lion thing has raised his profile again.

I'm really hoping for an impressive show worthy of the slot, with some good guest performers. If it's just Snoop, a hype man and a DJ it'll be a bit of a let-down. A full run-through of Doggystyle with all the Dogg Pound, and then a load of Snoop Lion material would be ideal.

I'm fairly sure Stevie Wonder on an exclusive is more than that. I'd suspect Elton would be too.

perhaps you're right - tho i reckon it would be close, from the little I know of what acts charge.

But Bestival tends to do both cheap and expensive headliners, which puts them in the position to spend (say) £400k on one headliner and just £100k on another, whereas other fests tend to go for acts at around the same level & price.

So what I'm getting at is that I'd be quite surprised if Bestival averaged $500k (which is about £330k) per headliner; they're perhaps paying something around that for their most expensive.

Just realised Atoms For Peace are free around Bestival time. They're yet to be announced for any UK festival shows, they've said they're not doing Glasto (not sure I believe them) which only really leaves Bestival if they want to do a UK festival & with the Flaming Lips & Belle & Sebastian apparently playing Friday the day would flow pretty well...

Smashing Pumpkins are touring the UK in July, not sure if there are any conflicting dates in September.

Pumpkins, Snoop and Elton would be the sort of eclectic line up that should get people to part with their cash. Not sure if an act like Vampire Weekend would pull in the punters?

A few acts I'd like to see in the next announcement:

Erykah Badu (She must perform 'You Got Me' with the Roots, but keep her away from Wayne Coyne :P), When Saints Go Machine, Goat, Dinosaur JR, Tegan & Sara, Earl Sweatshirt, James Blake, Tame Impala, Nas, Lauryn Hill, Flying Lotus, Tyler the Creator, Frank Ocean, Fucked Up, Kurt Vile, Beach House, Tricky, Bloody Beetroots, Public Image Ltd (perfect for the Thurs Big Top headliner slot)
