NEXT GEN CONSOLES

Interesting...

Anonymous developers have labelled the current state of Xbox One’s graphics drivers “horrible” and claimed the difference between PS4 and Xbox One is “significant” and “obvious.”
In a piece about the performance differences between Microsoft and Sony’s new consoles on Edge, a number of unnamed developers have said that while the platform holders continue to refine both systems, Sony’s is currently easier to work with.
According to one source, Microsoft has "been late on their drivers and that has been hurting them.” Another source says that the Xbox One graphics drivers are "horrible".
It is also being reported that the PS4’s memory reads between 40-50% faster than Xbox One, and that the PS4‘s Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) is around 50% faster than Xbox One’s.
The article says that a “platform-agnostic development build can run at around 30FPS in 1920×1080 on PS4, but it’ll run at ‘20-something’ FPS in 1600×900 on Xbox One”.
All sources stress that work on the graphics drivers will continue up to and beyond the Xbox One’s release, so it’s not a done deal. For now, however, it’s reportedly a pain in the ass.
Microsoft has already spoken on the issue of performance differences between the Xbox One and the PS4, saying “the way people are calculating the differences between the two machines isn't completely accurate.”
There’s more detail through here, but it’s important to note that this latest information is direct from developers themselves who are used to actually working with the machines.
It should also be noted that, for the period following the PS3’s launch, similar accusations were made about that console, with Valve most famously saying it was “too complicated to develop for.”
----------------------------
In the last but one paragraph, the more detail through here is the following.
-----------------------------
I see my statements the other day caused more of a stir than I had intended. I saw threads locking down as fast as they pop up, so I apologize for the delayed response.
I was hoping my comments would lead the discussion to be more about the games (and the fact that games on both systems look great) as a sign of my point about performance, but unfortunately I saw more discussion of my credibility.
So I thought I would add more detail to what I said the other day, that perhaps people can debate those individual merits instead of making personal attacks. This should hopefully dismiss the notion I'm simply creating FUD or spin.
I do want to be super clear: I'm not disparaging Sony. I'm not trying to diminish them, or their launch or what they have said. But I do need to draw comparisons since I am trying to explain that the way people are calculating the differences between the two machines isn't completely accurate. I think I've been upfront I have nothing but respect for those guys, but I'm not a fan of the mis-information about our performance.
So, here are couple of points about some of the individual parts for people to consider:
18 CU's vs. 12 CU's =/= 50% more performance. Multi-core processors have inherent inefficiency with more CU's, so it's simply incorrect to say 50% more GPU.
Adding to that, each of our CU's is running 6% faster. It's not simply a 6% clock speed increase overall.
We have more memory bandwidth. 176gb/sec is peak on paper for GDDR5. Our peak on paper is 272gb/sec. (68gb/sec DDR3 + 204gb/sec on ESRAM). ESRAM can do read/write cycles simultaneously so I see this number mis-quoted.
We have at least 10% more CPU. Not only a faster processor, but a better audio chip also offloading CPU cycles.
We understand GPGPU and its importance very well. Microsoft invented Direct Compute, and have been using GPGPU in a shipping product since 2010 - it's called Kinect.
Speaking of GPGPU - we have 3X the coherent bandwidth for GPGPU at 30gb/sec which significantly improves our ability for the CPU to efficiently read data generated by the GPU.
Hopefully with some of those more specific points people will understand where we have reduced bottlenecks in the system. I'm sure this will get debated endlessly but at least you can see I'm backing up my points.
I still I believe that we get little credit for the fact that, as a SW company, the people designing our system are some of the smartest graphics engineers around – they understand how to architect and balance a system for graphics performance. Each company has their strengths, and I feel that our strength is overlooked when evaluating both boxes.
Given this continued belief of a significant gap, we're working with our most senior graphics and silicon engineers to get into more depth on this topic. They will be more credible then I am, and can talk in detail about some of the benchmarking we've done and how we balanced our system.
Thanks again for letting my participate. Hope this gives people more background on my claims.

Probably won't recieve my copy of GTA until Wednesday, as I didn't click express delivery on checkout which was an extra £5.50. :threaten: (On gamestop)

That's why all of my pre orders in the past have been from amazon, free delivery and you get it guaranteed on release day!

(although on the amazon forums it says if you ordered it after the 13th of sep you won't get the game till the end of october?!)

I worked my arse off today in preparation for GTA V arrival tomorrow!

On a sidenote, bought Halo anniversary, Halo 4, and Mass Effect 2 for £20 from Game yesterday.

For some reason, I want to play all the Halo games in story mode order, so

Reach, 1, 2, ODST, 3, 4.

So they really need to get their arses in gear and announce a Halo 2 remake, because I never played that.

FIFA 14 web app is up. You can't really do much except open your starter packs. Best players I got were Gourcuff 79 & Fernando 79.

My friend got a Gareth Bale in his first pack!

Ugh i hate UT packs, i quite liked the idea of UT then I realized EA wanted you to pay for more or put loads hours into UT to earn/buy the contract cards >_>. It's the worse part of FIFA for me for sure.

Yeah I think I will give a GTA V a miss until it becomes cheap as good as it looks, I've got all of the others on my PC at the moment and not managed to finish any of them :P

Played it over the weekend once the kids had got to bed, fantastic game, so much to see and do.

They won't ban you for playing it early, it's amazon they need to come down on but its very doubtful they will bother with it being such a big company

The multiplayer isnt live yet anyway

I'm still torn, I've never enjoyed a GTA game, but loved Far Cry 3, crackdown, just cause. I dont know what it is? The sandbox format is great in some respects for me, but boring in others. I detest huge cutscenes.

The hype, marketing, reviews and word of mouth have me interested, but the dull pain of driving to someones house to take them to pick up their laundry just fills me with yawn.

The *big* problem the GTA 5 fans have been screaming about is the mandator cross-state drives to various mission starts. Imagine a vast version of Skyrim with no Fast Travel.

Hopefully it'll be something they end up patching.

that is one of my biggest pet hates about previous forays into GTA.
