I wouldn't be surprised. Regardless of the subject, it's still Darren Aronofsky who's more than a competent director. He can put together something good. Weird that this is his first proper go at a blockbuster though. Speaking of a proper blockbuster...

The Raid 2

I normally try to avoid the hype for movies, but my enthusiasm for this movie just couldn't be stopped. I loved the first one and all accounts said the second one is even better. So... is it? Well, yeah. There's nothing that this movie doesn't do better. The scope of the movie is much bigger as you'd expect given the setting of the first one. And this allows for some pretty majestic stuff and of course, the obligatory car chase which is among the best I've seen in a movie.

The brutality is absolutely top notch, and at times it's darkly hilarious. Especially in the climatic battles. A couple of genuine moments of belly laugh among the chaos. The action sequences are "jaws on the floor" stuff. A couple in particular had me breathless by the end of it. As far as action movies go, it'll be a struggle now to think of anything that matches this in pretty much any department.

10/10

Really? Worth watching? I've got a copy lying around, but hadn't actually considered watching it, because I've seen enough Statham to last a lifetime, making some of the good stuff he's done (mean machine, snatch, lock stock and others) somehow seem a long way off.

Might have to give it a whirl.

I thought Serenity was fairly good on first viewing but it has far less rewatch value than firefly, and didn't do enough of the brilliant subtle things in the tv show. It's decent, but it's not a special film in the same way firefly is a TV show.

Agents of shield is getting better but still not really reached the point where I'd recommend it

I have no idea how people can watched dubbed films. I downloaded The Raid thinking it was the normal Indonesian audio version but to my surprise the actors all had whiny American accents. I turned it off after 2 minutes and watched it the original version on Netflix. Anyway I loved it, all the fighting scene's felt so raw and real without CGI. I heard there was going to be an American remake, I seriously hope not!

I couldn't watch dubbed movies either. Unless it's animated ones, where the difference isn't as easily told. Thankfully, the vast majority of movies are subtitles these days. The Raid 2 no different when I seen it.

The Double

Decent stuff this, but clearly overplays the "quirky" card a bit too much. There are some serious nods to Brazil in this movie more than once. Definitely one that wears the influences on it's sleeves. Also worth it for seeing two very different characters played effectively by the one guy. 7/10

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Not as good as the first one, but not a movie without it's charms. For a start, the villains we're introduced to, Rhino and Electro, are pretty goofy characters. And in the case of Electro, this is something which it manages to shake off fairly easily, while keeping the base of the original guy firmly in place. Rhino never feels like someone to take seriously. Which is a shame. Andrew Garfield continues to be absolutely brilliant in the role. Puts Tobey Maguire to shame, who wasn't particularly bad btw. Anything involving post-accident Electro in this movie is a total joy, whether it be the moments of weakness or his moments of utter destruction to a blistering climatic showdown with Spider-Man, it's all class. So yeah, this is definitely a good movie and in keeping with Marvel movies not going wrong these days. 8/10

Calvary

Not a match for this. I'm not sure I QUITE enjoyed this as much as The Raid 2, but it's still getting a perfect score as I just can't justify scoring it down for any reason. Brendan Gleeson is amazing as the priest who finds out at confession that he's going to die the next week. "Killing a priest on a Sunday. That'll be a good one." And so the movie follows this man's life for the week that leads to that day, and to find out what exactly will happen on the day. It's a great journey as well, which covers all different aspects of religion and life itself. Sometimes quite thoughtful, at others just blatantly funny, and at others quite nasty. Apparently the director and Gleeson will be working on a new movie soon, which is fine by me. First The Guard, and now this. Anything else now becomes must-see. 10/10

Really want to see Calvary. Brendan Gleeson is one of my favourite actors, and the trailer looked fantastic

The new Spiderman film, I'm just not sure I can be bothered. The trailer looked like it could be for a video game, not a film

Locke

Points for effort here. A movie that has so much riding on the concrete business probably shouldn't be as fun as this is. I think it's a little TOO ambitious for it's own good, but I can't help appreciate the thoughts that went into making it. Trailers didn't give too much away, and for good reason, so I won't say too much either, other than go along and give it a shot. Some folk were unamused and walked out early, while most were highly amused.
