Ugh. These super serious superhero films are such a fucking drag, do these people know why people like superheroes? Because they're fun!

Christopher Reeve Superman, Adam West Batman, Lynda Carter Wonder Woman, absolute magic. Even without the fact that they were making a balls up of Superman, Man Of Steel was just a bad film. DC think they can copy the Marvel model by just cramming all their heroes into one film, but Marvel's films are all a tonne of fun, which is why they're so successful. Who gave a shit about Iron Man, Thor or Captain America before 2008? Now look at them, we're getting big budget Guardians of the Galaxy and Big Hero 6 film adaptations fer christsakes! DC need to ditch the silly seriousness and make something fun and colourful, The Lego Movie had a far better grasp on the appeal of their characters than they do. All you neckbeards that enjoy grim and gritty superhero films, grow the fuck up.

Nolan's serious superhero movies brought the genre back to life and made it profitable again. Now they're just trying to make a buck out of it, which is fairplay, that's what this sort of movie is about.

Not all Marvel movies are fun anyway. The Amazing Spider-Man isn't.

I think they are talking about just the Avengers films that are made by Marvel and not the ones they sold off like SpiderMan, Blade and X-Men. It's also worth remembering the film that kicked off the superhero flicks was X-Men which I wouldn't really call fun.

The last Nolan movie was an embarrassment for all concerned. From start to finish.

I can't rewatch it as it's too much effort but I still rate Bane & Catwoman as great in it, the rest of it is very meh.

Technically not Marvel, its Sony Pictures :P

Ah okay. I'm admittedly not that wise about the genre. I thought the more recent mega success of TDK and TDKR ushered in the age of the relentless superhero movies rather than the X-Men films in the early to mid 00's.

That helped bring superhero films into the mainstream because of the cinematic element of it, the high stakes and (for its time) modern look, but let's not pretend it wasn't a tonne of fun. It took itself seriously, but it had Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen completely chewing the scenery all the way through and it took ample opportunities to geek out and have fun with the fact that this was the X-Men on the big screen, they throw out intentionally corny one-liners all the way through. The cartoonish tone of the first two X movies (and Matthew Vaughn's First Class is infinitely more over-the-top that those) is worlds away from the Nolan films.

Yes, but The X-Men, like most comic superheroes, was always camper than The Dark Knight. It's not just that Nolan randomly decided to make Batman dark and brooding, that adaptation had already happened in the comics and right or wrong fans adored it.

The Amazing Spider-Man films are the good Spider-Man films, but tonally it's much darker than the comics than spawned it.

I reckon Tim Burton is way closer to Frank Miller than Nolan. The world of The Dark Knight is gaudy and off-the-wall, it's very cartoony, and Batman is a total lunatic, Nolan plays it all very straight and insists on trying to make it all as real-world as possible. It's probably closest to Year One if anything. The X-Men have had many dark turns, anything you find in Batman comics, you can probably find somewhere in X-Men. I'm not even knocking Nolan's Batman, it was alright for a three film series, it's the new series trying to ape the style that I'm not happy with. Man Of Steel was a totally horrible film, no redeeming features at all, and they're carrying that on and bringing WW down with them.

In other film news, The Cornerhouse in Manchester is doing a Studio Ghibli season, I started clearing space in my diary, but I've just noticed that they're showing the Japanese language films with English subtitles. That makes me nothappy, the quality of most modern dubs on Ghibli films are very good, the hardcore fans that will only watch subtitled films are just blowhards that want to keep their niche as inaccessible as possible to the mainstream. No matter what excuses they throw out about it being "distracting" that the dialogue doesn't match the mouths 100%, or has been forced to fit the film, or missed the original meaning, none of this is as awkward of trying to focus on one of the most magnificent spectacles of animation, while also trying to keep up with the subtitles. It's a clunky and labourious way of experiencing the film, a bad dub may sometimes take you out of the film, subtitles will always take you out of the film. So I'm not going, the dickhead Japanophiles can sit among themselves and congratulate each other about how they're all proper fans, the tossers.
