whisty
Gonna jump in gents. Take every chance to promote this person & make no apologies for doing so. Zee Gachette has her own band. In a previous incarnation sang as part of Slow Train Soul and from hearing some tracks from them and loving the vocals discovered Zee Gachette, aka Z-Star. I know I'm not the only one to do that by a long shot. Anyway, seen her a few time and I strongly urge anybody to go see and listen if you get the chance. "It has been said that the band "rock with so much raw funk, sexualised soul and blues rock passion that it's impossible not to be moved" [1] Rock royalty, Jimmy Page and Roger Daltrey, both offered their seal of approval having caught the new sound at the Brighton Music Awards when Z-STAR picked up the best live act award presented by Psychedelic rock legend Arthur Brown. In Spring 2014" A little taster of a very versatile performer/artist who writes most of her own songs but here performing a classic in her own way. Link word Soul or Train. And something else to show something of her versatility. Have also seen her singing with Nigel Kennedy. Last but not least to show yet another side, a nice vid put to a lovely song to warm anybodys cockels. Won't bore you any further Edited August 23, 2014 by whisty
grumpyhack
Thanks Whisty. You're very good at picking up on new, developing talent. My strength seems to lie more in people who've gone, are no more or a bit of history. I'm afraid this is another example. The late Eva Cassidy was a talent not truly recognised until after the early death. This is Eva's version of People Get Ready (there's a train a coming). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZ-gqfAaHos And the link word is from her great interpretation of Somewhere Over The Rainbow This is Katie Melua in the series Duet Impossible with Eva https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHfn1ZBQpXw
whisty
Woman In the spirit of Grumpy's gonners The unmistakeable vocal style of Mr Hazelwood, maybe best known for having written and produced the 1966 Nancy Sinatra hit, These Boots Are Made For Walking. whisty
Roach Amongst other things, Archie Roach worked on the soundtrack to a great Australian movie, The Tracker. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0212132/ Directed by Rolf De Heer who also directed Ten Canoes, a marvelous movie which gets top slot in a list of movies focused on Aboriginal peoples. Movie clip to Archie Roach music. Edited August 29, 2014 by whisty
grumpyhack
Good to have you back Whisty. Broadening my musical knowledge once again. Another fish connection....Archie Roach was also the name of the character played by John Cleese in Fish Called Wanda. (Great film). Going a bit folky with this. grumpyhack
If you grip you have to Hang On Lots of Hang On songs but this is the late Tim Hardin who was a great songwriter (If I Was a Carpenter etc.) and Hang On To A Dream. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CbMv5tkiD0 And another jazzier version from The Nice - who mutated into Emerson, Lake and Palmer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RSRoM_fc9I
whisty
Think I prefer the Jazzier ELP, nice Piano Sorry I missed Emiliana Torrini this year. grumpyhack
I'll go with mouse and link to Rat or Trap This is the Boomtown Rats at this year's Wychwood Festival (my first fest of the season and highly recommended). I wasn't sure if his Bobness was going to play as it was quite soon after the death of Peaches but, fair play, they did a pretty good set. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ErW3nxdddE Edited September 8, 2014 by grumpyhack
brandycoke
Sounded ok that Rats gig. Tonic for the troops, was an album that i used to listen to way back, some great tunes on it too. Line-up doesn't look like its changed too much either, couldn't see Gerry Cott though. "We're caught in a trap"..first lines that came into my head, so here's a random clip of Glenn Tilbrook doing Suspicious minds, from a car park in Colchester. Saw him recently, and he had his young son Leon on stage doing his bit ..most definitely a chip off the old block.
grumpyhack
Glenn is always great value - especially with The Fluffers. This was their finale at Glasto in 2008 after which an encore was simply impossible. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1MmyTnr858 As for a link to suspicious, after this I'd have to go for something suspicion can cause - Chaos
whisty
Discovered Jojo Mayer purely by accident a couple months ago, bit infatuated at the minute to the point of booking a trip to Poland to go see. So a tenuous link at best, if you go too Far you'll ultimately reach chaos. "Jojo Mayer is known for bringing together jazz, drum and bass, jungle, and other influences. He is also famous for his ability to play the rhythms of programmed jungle drum 'n' bass music on acoustic drums, terming this technique "reverse engineering", a phrase borrowed from computing.[1] He executes this approach using various methods such as the heel-toe bass drum technique, the Moeller stroke, and the "pull-out" or "push-pull" accent which takes the beat on the rebound. Using these techniques, he can play beats at astonishing speeds. A few of his main influences are Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette and Buddy Rich"
grumpyhack
Technically very good drumming but a bit lacking in melody for me. Not sure I'd go to Poland to see them Whisty - but each to their own. My teenage hero was Buddy Rich. I remember seeing him at the Colston Hall in Bristol where he ended his show with an epic drum solo. As he stood mopping his brow someone in the audience shouted: "One more time!" and brought the house down. From Far my link is to Away. This is Slade, who I still think were one of the great under-appreciated bands of their time. Good songwriting, excellent musicianship and storming live. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qysk6IgeFmQ Their history charted here in this compilation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7_Gr9lucO8 Edited September 13, 2014 by grumpyhack
whisty
Tend to agree about the melody bit although A £50 return flight, beer between £1 & £2 & looking for a weekend away before the end of the year, not really knowing where to go on a limited budget kind of swung it. Slade in my teens didn't do it for me, especially as I was listening to the kind of thing in my link at the time, but I appreciate they were a great band and have fond memories. They should play Pyramid midday Sunday I reckon Fairies The man sounds a bit off key to me but loved this song back in the day.
