grumpyhack
Having grown up in Bristol there is a well known hill just up and off to the left of Park Street called Brandon Hill. (Where we used to bunk off school for a cigarette). On Brandon Hill is the Cabot Tower, a memorial to the explorer John Cabot, a Venetian who went to Bristol to get sponsorship for a voyage of discovery that had him land up in Newfoundland, Canada in 1497. He didn't 'discover' Canada as such, as there were already people living there, but it was the first European encounter with North America since the Vikings. So Brandon leads to HILL. This is Lauryn Hill with her version of Killing Me Softly https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbS0fUtywms Though I prefer the Roberta Flack version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBLxcYpB9-A

grumpyhack
Time for another of Grumpy's Gonners. Johnny Preston died in 2011 aged 71. He explains the origin of the song in the intro. So the link word is BEAR. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XBXjH6QET4 Edited January 9, 2015 by grumpyhack
whisty
Well there you go, just learned what American Pie was all about by linking to The Big Bopper via Mr Preston up there. I must have heard that song hundreds of times. Sometimes I wonder if I know anyhing at all! Who doesn't like Hugs
grumpyhack
Glad American Pie now makes sense Whisty. Good bit of link following. Now a convoluted link from Hugs to Lads. Back in the mists of time there was a band called Manfred Mann. It was originally the Mann-Hugg Blues Band, so named after keyboardist Manfred Mann and drummer Mike Hugg. Paul Jones was the lead singer. Although Hugg was originally a drummer in later incarnations of the band he also played vibraphone, keyboards and occasionally sang. He branched into song writing with things like "Mister You're a Better Man Than I" for The Yardbirds and most of the soundtrack for the film Up The Junction.. He also co-wrote and sang the theme song for the TV series "Whatever Happened to The Likely Lads." The Likely Lads starred James Bolam, seen more recently in the TV cop series New Tricks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcJ4C0pTGDw&list=PL3G-K8eQQmyuwt3XPB6-4ki3srZwQ81sA&index=

grumpyhack
Another Grumpy Gonner, but one of the finest singer songwriters of all time. This is Dory Previn, who died in 2012 aged 86. For a while she was Mrs Andre Previn, until he left her for the much younger Mia Farrow. Her album Mythical Kings and Iguanas is well worth hunting out. Full of songs of angst, anger and tender love. This is The Lady with the BRAID https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vE4rExrR19M&list=RDvE4rExrR19M#t=32 Sorry no performance video. But to lighten things also an excuse to include Andre Previn's great appearance with Morecombe and Wise with the classic line: "I'm playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7yb-JncKow
grumpyhack
Braid > plait > hair > MANE Just got back from seeing the stage show of the Lion King. What a breathtaking and imaginative stage production. grumpyhack
Nice band Oneeye. The woman singer has a lovely voice. Reminds me a little of Sandy Denny. I wish them success. THANK You for the Days. Still one of my favourite standout Glasto performances. (Starts with Waterloo Sunset but goes into Days at about 3.50). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6hMWM_zW70
oneeye
Glad you liked them grumps,; they're doing ok in and around the Portsmouth area. I agree with the likeness to Sandy Denny. So..., from thank to YOU; couldn't find a live version though. Another one of your goners I reckon grumpyhack, though she did leave this world too early; tragic. PS Ray Davies was indeed part of a glorious afternoon in the scorching sunshine; emotional stuff Edited January 14, 2015 by oneeye
grumpyhack
You - WHO Knows Where The Time Goes? Another bit of vintage Sandy. A song she wrote and recorded with The Strawbs in 1967 in Denmark. She later took it with her when she joined Fairport. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ycaoV0WXfk Again sorry no live vid but very few of her live performances were filmed in those days. grumpyhack
Love The Who Oneeye. Another of my favourite Glasto sets. Also saw Daltry's tour last year. He's still on good form. So, from You to PICTURE of You by Joe Brown. A superb performer and an excellent guitarist and mandolin player. He would be a great Glasto Oldies act. Also daughter Sam is a great singer (often working with Jools Holland). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jc7y6d9CvCA Joe was a great mate of George Harrison and taught him how to play the mandolin. He was asked to sing this close the Memorial to George Concert by George's widow Olivia. There wasn't a dry eye in the house. I've also seen him do it at other festivals and always provokes tears. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGivnGv-HXs Edited January 15, 2015 by grumpyhack
oneeye
Joe Brown's one of those people who never seems to age, he must be at least 107 years old! Agee on a lad to slot, would go down a treat. Anyway, from picture to STORY
grumpyhack
We're on a roll here Oneeye. Another of Grumpy's Gonners but a superb singer songwriter well worth hunting out - Harry Chapin. The closest thing he had to a hit was this, WOLD, the poignant story of a man who splits from his wife, works around the US as a radio station DJ, then makes the phone call to sound out a reconciliation only to discover that she's got another man. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVh6aOwY08g Harry Chapin did lots of benefit concerts for famine relief charities and died in a car crash on his way between gigs when a lorry went out of control and hit his little VW. He said that he wrote songs about big moments in the lives of ordinary people. This is from his album SHORT Stories. This is another example of a Harry Chapin story Mr Tanner. The story of a man who ran a dry cleaning shop but was also a singer. He was persuaded by friends to do a concert but sadly his hopes of stardom didn't work out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUCZUNevrEQ Edited January 15, 2015 by grumpyhack

whisty
Some great links up there starting with oneye's family band. No intro needed for this i'm sure, there's a later vid from a show but the live version from the prison is unbeatable for this highly disturbing song.
