  1. 1. Biffy Clyro

    • Nah, they are only big enough to headline in Scotland
    • Yeah, that X-factor kid's cover has made them huge
  2. 2. Mumford & Sons

    • Nah, they are Dad's music and they wouldn't go to a festival
    • Yeah, their albums has gone platinum on both sides of the pond
  3. 3. Bloc Party

    • Nah, they can only do academy tours
    • Yeah, they have reformed and bands always headline when they reform

Nah, Download started the same year Linkin Park headlined R&L.

White Stripes & Strokes did well the others where bumped too early despite looking promising for bigger things (well expect Razorlight) whilst Darkness were literally the biggest band in the UK at the time.

The same thing could as easily happen to Mumford, Biffy & Bloc and headline to then just disapear as they are about on par with most the bands named.

Biffy have more than proved themselves to be headliner worthy, it's just a case of seeing if their new album propels them further.

Mumford & Sons are fucking huge at the moment. But it'd be wiser to leave it a year or two to see if their second album is bigger, and if they retain their popularity.

Bloc Party are a popular band. But have never made it to headline status. They aren't a headline act, but they are a Reading & Leeds band. They are hugely popular with the audience and have been for a long time. If they ever are going to headline now would be the time, because I can't see them being this big forever. They're only going to decrease in popularity. But personally, they're a sub band and will never be anything more.

I'm sure I posted earlier....

I don't think Biffy, right now, are big enough to headline. They've subbed this summer, and haven't gained in popularity or done anything since. They will, if not next summer then the one after, be big enough to headline. I think they'd be better set to make the step up if they took a slight break from touring.

Mumford aren't, and while they're hugely popular, I still think next summer they'll be comparable to Flo this. 2 albums shouldn't be enough to headline.

Bloc definitely aren't, and probably never will be.

In an nme article this week with Biffy, it says that they have set their sights on headlining T and Reading in the future, and have got pyrotechnics in their stage show for that reason.

Whilst they need to get the offer first, i got the impression that they are expecting to headline next year.

I went for yes, no, no. Cant see that Bloc Party are even as big as they were last time they subbed so they arent headliners for me. Mumford are really popular but I dont think theyre a huge band yet. And I dont think theyd go down that well at R/L as headliners. I could even see them third. I think more than anything its just too early to call them headliners after one album. Itll be interesting to see how well their next album sells. As for Biffy, I think theyre easily headliners if FR want them to be, theyre current, theyre popular, theyre a great live band, they could definitely make the step up. The thing is though, whilst theres no doubt they are capable of headlining, I can see them not headlining.

But at the end of the day, MCR headlined the other year, therefore anything is possible, wouldnt surprise me if we get Paramore...

All 3 could be potential headliners next year I think.

Mumford's lack of material make them least likely I would say but it hasn't stopped R&L before. Depends how well the second album sells I guess, if its just more of the same, people could quickly lose interest

Bloc Party/ Biffy could easily headline a night alongside two other bigger bands (Blur, Metallica for eg), they've both pulled massive crowds in lesser slots previously and now both have a wealth of material to draw from.

Personally I'd be very happy with Friday Bloc Party, Saturday Biffy, Sunday Metallica myself. Not too keen on Mumford, so they can fuck off to V!

  • 4 weeks later...

It's required at a festival like R&L where there is immediate competiton and their own parameters for headliners is pretty small and rigid. it's not like Glasto or IOW where they'd just branch out and go and get Tom Petty, Springsteen or Beyonce.

Of course they could if they wanted to but that's another argument altogether, the fact is that they don't so instead of being creative with genres they push bands up.

Biffy have announced a pretty extensive UK arena tour, if they can sell out a few dates then

I'd say that could justify a headlining slot, I saw them at there Leeds 02 gig last month and they were amazing.

Bloc Party unfortunately aren't big enough, but there new album is the best stuff they've done.

Mumford & Sons are just awful.
