An 800gm loaf goes through a cutting grid. the grid is spaced for thick or medium or thin - end of. the only reasonable argument would be that the thin cutter has more blades and they need replacing at a greater rate than the thick cutter.

when I buy my bread, it is based on the slice count per loaf. 16+2 means 16 slices and 2 crusts. 18+2 is 18 slices and 2 crusts and therefore thinner than the 16+2.

the "per slice" cost is lower on the thinner loaf, but we dont buy bread by the slice do we?

sorry for the highly irresponsible "sensible" answer of the thread.

Thanks for all the replies guys. From my own opinion bread is a serious subject. I have within the last 6 months been on two bread making courses each being a day in length. Two of the best courses I've ever been on and I actually got to make my own bread from scratch (ie not just from a pre-mixed bag) which has been a desire of mine since way back (years and years). Only problem is that my memory is shockingly crap and I know longer know how to make the stuff (I don't have a live culture either to get the ball rolling). Still, it was worth every penny just to make the loaves I did at the time. Despite this memory failure I can't recommend these people enough. If your interested and in the Birmingham area PM me and I'll let you know who they are. And no, I don't know them personally.

Can a sandwich be made out of just one slice of bread or do you need two? I sometimes just fill half a slice with my chosen filling fold it over and I have my sandwich. Now a colleague of mine at work states that a sandwich can only be made by using at least two slices of bread.
