I haven't really posted in this thread as it seems to be a rehash of everything discussed but something that rarely seems to get brought up is the actual availability of headliners... everyone talks about bands not being strong enough to headline or getting the big acts in but what if they arent touring/played the fest too recently... that statement seems to apply to most of the big headliners I can think of... and the few big acts that are touring seem to be doing other fests/other big shows ala Green Day, The Killers, Arctic Monkeys etc. Eminem is probably the biggest act they could have got... otherwise I don't see how the festival can get anyone who would be definitely regarded as a strong headliner.. except for Blur but if they aren't doing UK shows then they are out of the picture. Really can't see the third headliner being anyone other than Black Sabbath, Mumford & Sons or System of a Down... and atm I'm sticking with SOAD just based on when they are touring. Can't see the situation being any different unless Reading changes up their tactic totally and books someone like Lady Gaga, Rihanna or Fleetwood Mac etc.

PS I know this is a rehash also just doesnt seem to be brought up enough...

I think the availability of potential headliners is one of the first things that's considered, that's why they're instantly ruled out when they announce other festivals or it's immediately brought up if others are in Europe in August. Happens every year.

The thing about Blur not doing UK shows is rubbish. They've said they're never playing gigs again enough times for you to know they're always gonna keep you guessing. They could still play V for all we know and I wouldn't be at all surprised if they were announced for one after 'ruling out UK shows'.

I know that wasn't your main point but I just don't see them as out of the picture.

No it's not. There was a tweet from thrash hits saying they had heard that biffy and SOAD were two of the headliners from Reading and Leeds. That was way before SOAD had announced anything, and was the first reason they were discussed. The second reason they are being discussed is they were announced for European festivals, and that tweet gives the argument more conviction.

If SOAD play I doubt they'd headline. I don't think they're mainstream enough anymore.

Having said that, I thought the same Arcade Fire, but I think Melvin thought they were going places, when they clearly weren't. SOAD's moment has clearly passed. (Although that could also be said about The Cure....)

On the subject of Mumford and Sons, while I accept that they may be a headline size act now, I think it must be about the end of the road for them. They've got two albums which are both pretty much the same kind of stuff, where are they going to go for their third album? They're a folk rock band, that's their act, I don't see how much further they can go with it.

I think it's more likely they'll sub if they play.
