There definitely seems to be a lack of new Headline sized acts coming through recently. There was an explosion of new guitar bands coming through between 2003-2004, that has provided the festival with fresh headline options, since I have been going in 2006. If you look at the bands that have been bumped up to headline in the last 7 years they have all debuted in that 2 year period which I find amazing.

2006: Franz Ferdinand (debut Franz Ferdinand released 9th February ‘04)

2007: Razorlight (debut Up All Night released 28th June ’04)

2008: The Killers (debut Hot Fuss released 7th June ’04)

2009: Kings of Leon (debut Youth and Young Manhood released 7th July ’03)

2010: Arcade Fire (debut Funeral released 14th September ’04)

2011: My Chemical Romance (major label debut Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge released 8th June’04)

2012: Kasabian (debut Kasabian released 13th September ’04)

Biffy Clyro debuted with Blackened Sky on 10th March ’02 so could perhaps be included for 2013 if you slightly extend the time period.

It will be interesting to see whether we now begin to see more new headline acts like Biffy Clyro who gradually work their way up the bill. This is their 6th appearance at the festival coinciding with their 6th studio album, compared with the previous precedent of acts making the jump much quicker:

2006: Franz Ferdinand (3rd appearance, 2 albums) [2 years after debut]

2007: Razorlight (4th appearance, 2 albums) [3 years after debut]

2008: The Killers (2nd appearance, 2 albums) [4 years after debut]

2009: Arctic Monkeys (3rd appearance, 3 albums) [3 years after debut]

2009: Kings of Leon (3rd appearance, 4 albums) [6 years after debut]

2010: Arcade Fire (3rd appearance, 3 albums) [6 years after debut]

2011: My Chemical Romance (3rd appearance, 3/4 albums) [7 years after major label debut]

2012: Kasabian (3rd appearance, 4 albums) [8 years after debut]

I’m interested in whether people think this trend will continue and we will see more experienced bands headlining? When will the next crop of headline sized acts appear? Will the likes of Mumford & Sons, The Vaccines, The XX, Florence + the Machine, Pamore, Enter Shikari, Bullet for My Valentine & You Me at Six be the headliners of years to come as some have suggested?

That's actually quite an interesting list. I'd never really thought about it, but the evidence is quite striking. They are all definitely in the indie group though, but still there's a valid point.

What's the most recent headliner (by debut)? For R+L it's Arctic Monkeys, who had their debut 7 years ago. And for all festivals, Mumford's step up this year is the only one since.

Not including bands who have made the step up, like Arcade Fire, in that time frame is perhaps a little unfair but there's still a point there that Mumford and Sons are the only new headliner band of the last 7 years.

Surely something's wrong here?

Just so I'm contributing to the thread, Black Keys will surely be a headliner soon. If things go well with Alt-J I can see them becoming huge, as long as they can follow up. Probably (and hopefully) not R+L, but maybe Glastonbury in 4 years or so.

The Black Keys, Florence and the machine, The Vacccines, Two door cinema club, Enter Shikari, Chase and Status, Watch the throne (why not), You me at six, Paramore.

As for brand new bands, I'd love to see the likes of Palma Violets, Splashh, Swim Deep and Peace make it big, but for the time being that's nothing more thn guess work.

I guess im using 2006 as a starting point because it is my festivalling year 0 so to speak. Muse and Radiohead were headline size well before 2006 so I wouldn't really consider them new headliners. Kings of Leon and Kasabian could both have headlined Reading earlier than they did but for whatevever reason other acts were booked or they played elsewhere.

The fact that the newest headliner for the last 7 years (barring Arctic Monkeys in '09) all debuted in 03-04 inevitably means that more recent examples like Kasabian will have more headlining experience than Franz Ferdinand or Razorlight did simply because they've been around longer and that is part of my point.
