It depends what's gone on back stage. I doubt Trent would take the offense against Biffy Clyro unless he honestly thought they were partially to blame for what ever went on. In 2007 he performed under Billy Corgan who he's hated for years without a hick up, so I doubt it's simply a case of sour grapes because they're headlining.

Also, a festival isn't just about the headliners. :banghead:

Personally, although I loved the set, I think Biffy's set up was slightly overkill. Just the lasers and maybe the starting thing were needed - the rest (for example the tree etc.) seemed unnecessary. So perhaps that's what Trent was annoyed about, also considering Biffy haven't had a very complicated setup at other shows, whilst NIN have really focused on the whole Lights thing throughout the year.

I'm sure many of you will be glad to know I thoroughly enjoyed NIN's set, despite the constant "hardcore" fans shouting 'You're only here for Biffy aren't you?!' at me before I turned around and sang along to every lyric in The Hand That Feeds and Head Like A Hole - tossers

Well none of us really know what happened, but I didn't really mean cause they're headlining and nin are subbing, more cause they had priority equipment, time, space etc. because of the headliner status

and of course it isn't, but a lot of the festival is going to be based around the headliners (of every stage, not just the main)

edit; I do hope there wasn't any sort of bust up backstage. I love them both too much.

I was a bit let down by the length of the set (was expecting another 15 minutes or so) and they did miss a few of my favourite tunes (Something I Can Never Have and We're In This Together would've been nice), but it was still a great performance. I went home after their set anyway, Biffy don't interest me,

I wonder if it would've been better to have NIN headline the Friday, with Biffy under Green Day on the Sunday or something. Obviously it wouldn't be better for Biffy, but it would've made more sense to me.

Biffy crowd was huge. No way should NIN have headlined, would of ended up a massive mistake from the organizers. Going by crowd size Deftones was larger than NIN.

Of the subs both C&S and SOAD could have stepped up to headline based on size.

Nope, its because they don't have many fans who attend r & l festivals. As good as they are they're not headliners, they're not even subs looking at their pulling power the last 2 times they've played. They would have been better placed headlining the NME, although the crowd still wouldn't have filled the tent.

NIN were incredible, just incredible. But when he went off, all I heard were shouts of Closer? Starfuckers Inc.? Hurt? Which were the songs I had been looking forward to the most, so definitely gonna have to buy a ticket for their tour (If it happens).

And too little crowd interaction, and this ego shit.

I agree that the crowd was horribly small for NIN, I just wonder if that was because it was such a diverse lineup that day. I think a lineup of Deftones/SOAD/NIN would appeal more to a certain demographic. I imagine a lot more day tickets would've gone to NIN fans if they'd had a headline slot. But then personally I'd be happy to see Deftones get a headline slot, although Reading probably wouldn't be the right festival for it.

After the response their 2007 show got I'm sure the organisers were glad to have them back, and I expect they helped to shift a reasonable number of day tickets.

In 2007 they definitely seemed to have the full production set and I imagine Trent expected to be able to do the same again. It wouldn't surprise me to discover that the contract small print had something in it along the lines of the headliners stage set-up taking priority, and that Trent hadn't thought it would be a problem as it hadn't been 6 years ago.

I imagine Trent signed up to play Reading to help promote Hesitation Marks. I think it was his R1 interview where he said that something like 13 of 16 (I can't remember exact numbers) of their festival sets this year were being broadcast and that's obviously very much a key part of the marketing strategy. To then find out his set-up wasn't going to happen probably pissed him off, especially if it was something which was a mistake on his behalf for not reading the whole contract. Hence the public lashing out at the organisers and Biffy. Leeds was probably always an after thought as a "we have to do both, but we'd rather only do Reading as it'll give the exposure".

I might be wide of the mark with that. I'm disappointed we didn't get the full show, but Trent's reaction doesn't surprise me. Sonisphere 2009 anyone?

Will be interesting to see what size venues they do for the April tour. Arenas sold out easily last time but that was the Wave Goodbye tour. I think if they do fests in the UK again they need to look more at headlining other at Glastonbury or headlining Download (as the smallest headliner with maybe a strong sub and two massive other headliners). Think their fanbase would be more at those sort of places than at Reading nowadays.
