Yeah, fob pulled out to do the vma's, it was a few months before they really went big.

Things always look different with hindsight though, like how in 05, kol were a bit of a weak sub. I remember the year before they'd bagged a big slot at v somehow and played before oasis at glastonbury at the gallaghers request, but they were a completely different band to today.

I'm with VCK though, 2000 and 2002 looked like fantastic years.

Kings of Leon weren't considered a weak sub at the time. They were big then, just in a different way to what they became. They were a band with massive critical success and haha shake heartbreak was huge with the Leeds crowd at the time. Remember this is before the crowd changed to 6th form students and people who are happy to have the lumineers play 4th :)

How much the standard of the festival has gone downhill since 2001. What a line-up that was, puts this year's to shame. Aside from the aforementioned, there was Fun Lovin' Criminals, Supergrass, Feeder, Rancid, Eels, QOTSA, The Strokes, The Cult and the Manics when they were one of the biggest bands in the country. Oh, and OPM. :D

In 2001 Coldplay were coming off a tour of Academy venues, Muse had only just released OoS and had also just done academies.

Besides if you want to go for line-ups that featured a ridiculous number of headliners...

Apart from the following year, every Reading since then has had at least one band on that line-up headline.

Funny you should say that, I was in 6th form around that time, was a massive kol fan (still am despite come around sundown being terrible), but they were playing Apollo venues at the time and they did seem out of their depth.

I still remember loads of people whinging about qotsa playing under the killers, some things never change, the lineup may look awesome years on, but people will always find something to moan about.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the weekend was that Manson was fantastic, I've heard he's been terrible at all the download/sonisphere shows.
