The last time Biffy Clyro, Green Day, System Of A Down and Eminem all played Reading and Leeds together...

Panic weren't that big, I remember they played 7th the previous year after being pushed up from 8th, due to Audioslave pulling out and the other bands that day being pushed up, and them having no new material in between the 2006 and 07 festivals. I also remember thinking 2nd might have been a bit too much of a push for Arcade Fire, but it didn't matter in the end because they were incredible in 2007 and pulled the slot off with perfection, blowing a lacklustre RHCP off the stage in the process, and of course they've gone onto bigger things since.

2009 wasn't too weak of a line-up in retrospect, just that the days were all jumbled up and had an unorganised order to them. KOL and Kaiser Chiefs closing the "heavy day" for example. I still remember thinking "WTF?" as I saw that the usually "heavy Sunday" at Reading was filled with Indie bands, and Arctic Monkeys were headlining a rather eclectic day featuring the likes of The Prodigy, Ian Brown, Enter Shikari and Eagles Of Death Metal!

I really do hope they put in some bands above Hadoken! and push them down, 6th would be too ludicrous. In fact, put someone in between The Lumineers and Fall Out Boy. A bit of Public Enemy wouldn't go amiss in that slot. ;)

Ok essay time....

Panic were certainly massive in my demographic, alot of the girls I chatted up at the time were panic fans and they did pull a big crowd. They may have not realised new material, but the material certainly was more known and accepted by 07. I hate sticking up for them cause they're awful, but I accepted it at the time as an enemy.

The subs were abit different, and yes arcade fire was a wtf, but you can mostly accept that reading know what they're doing with stuff like that. They knew they were heralded as a massive live act with big songs so have them a shot. I think the fact 2 went on to headline shows they were confident and knew they were destined for bigger things.

And on 09....

Yeah, looking back it does look better. I wasn't a fan of the headliners, radio head was an amazing booking but I was dissapointed with KoL and Arctics personally, as although massive, I've always hated KoL and as soon as I heard crying lightening I was concerned about the set. Wasn't as varied in headliners as most years. I think a major flaw as well was not announcing faith no more at the start - I know they couldn't, but it would have been alot better for me to initially get a ticket had I known they were playing (even though it was a great surprise when they did!)

Unfortunately, I don't think lumineers are gonna go down - editors should have been there, but the slots have been decided. I hope to god they didn't put those extra 6th acts on the poster because they will be there, but as to just give an indicator of which extra bands will be on that days main somewhere - hadouken 6th would be silly. But I think this lineup is gonna get sweeter, 3 days of lock up should be good, and hopefully FR headliners are a blast!

The last genuinely strong line-up Reading and Leeds had, shame I didn't go to the festival. That day with Arcade Fire, The Libertines and Gaslight all on the same day looked brilliant. Plus Weezer and QOTSA too. There were no "why are they so high?" bookings, unlike Friendly Fires, Bombay Bicycle Club or The Lumineers in the years since.

They also took a bit of a gamble with the headliners as well, which I admire, as no-one could have predicted those three to headline back in 2009.
