GuitarManDan15
Really? Again its very subjective, but I feel the Top 6 on Main are the strongest they've been since 2008.
the wonderwhy
I think White Lies and Frank Turner are pretty similar to the acts you've mentioned there tbh.
mrtourette
I'll reserve judgement on this year until the line-up's finished. Until then, probably 2001.
mrtourette
The luminers, white lies and frank turner all playing fourh is ridiculous! We've had lostprophets (before the fiddling accusations), the cribs, cypress hill, deftones, vampire weekend, jimmy eat world and friendly fires play that slot in the last few years. Those bands have nothing on those!
kev1664
2009 was the worst lineup of the ones I've been to (2008 onwards) yet it was one of the years I had the most fun, maybe because I'd written off most of the music before I went. Currently this year is really strong for me, but that's mainly because I like most on the main stage and there are a couple on the NME that I want to see. If we get some of the bands kicking about like billy talent and alkaline trio then it'll get even better. I can understand people's gripes with the NME, but the main stage far outweighs that for my tastes.
Tobieski
Not really always found them quite good live, I can think of many headliners alot worse than them. They got lucky headlining festivals though, you could also say that for many bands though. .
lightning1000
2007. Why are we debating this????
Chinaski_
This year or 2008. Neither had many bands I wanted to see.
Areophobia
Conversely I think 2008 was one of the strongest. @ GuitarManDan - Well Green Day and Eminem may not be at the peak of their popularity - but they're still massive bands thats will go down as legendary. Certainly ones to say "I saw them" to the children one day. The barometer I use !
edgar
2004. Main stage was an abomination apart from Thrice, Dropkick Murphys, Hundred Reasons and Jurassic 5.
adam1234
I need to wait for the rest of this years lineup really, but so far it's pretty poor overall. Eminem is shite, green day will be ok for nostalgia, biffy class. Subs are very strong. Nme is a complete joke and some of the placing are ridiculous lumineers, Azelia banks. Nme headliners are shite. I hope tame impala don't clash with chase & status but looks like they will!
the wonderwhy
2007 looks pretty good if you ask me. Kings of Leon when they were writing fucking great music, Arcade Fire, NIN, Ash, The Klaxons, Maximo Park, JEW (twice), EODM, Subways, Horrors, LCD Soundsystem, Jamie T, Dinosaur Jr... Headliners aren't great, but RHCP were only perceived to be shit after the fest weren't they?
giantwagon
Top 4 main stage every day this year, for me, is extremely strong. (I've moved The Lumineers down and Editors up ). So for me this year is very strong, and I personally think that Alt-J headlining NME is a great booking. Apart from Muse and Arctic Monkeys, top 3 on every day in 2006 is terrible. the wonderwhy
KoL were ace in '07. And you've missed out most of the great bands on the lower stages from that year. SSPU, Battles, Turbonegro (who sadly clashed with NIN/Pumpkins), Unkle (who thankfully clashed with RHCP), Crystal Castles, Manchester Orchestra, Maps. I missed more bands in '07 that I wanted to see than I have in every year since cumulatively. And yeah, RHCP were thought to be a strong headliner until their performances at R+L. Was very little hate for them here before the fest.
lightning1000
I like none of those bands except nin and smashing pumpkins. I thought sp were pretty poor as well. Arcade fire and nin were the only 2 sets of the weekend id put in my top 100.
kaosmark2
Yeah, I didn't delve that fair into it. Decent strength in depth that year IMO
Chinaski_
The mainstage was a bit pants apart from the subs, but the depth down the lineup was fantastic. Lockup, Dance and FR stages all the best there's been this century IMO.
lightning1000
Lock ups best year was 08 for me. Pennywise Less than Jake Alkaline trio Goldfinger Gaslight anthem Frank Turner Thrice Cancer bats Fucked up Flogging Molly MxPx The king blues (when they were good) Random hand How many of us would take that this year? I know I would.

kaosmark2
2007: JEW Living End The Bronx King Blues (when they were good) Turbonegro Against Me Dwarves Cancer Bats Mind you, I don't usually LIKE lock-up bands, so my standards are a bit different to everyone else's. Matt42
2011 was pretty weak for that festival year! Out of all the options I reckon reading was quite lazy!
kaosmark2
2011 was seriously crap. I only saw 4 bands. 3.5 of them were awesome though, and I didn't bother taking the Friday off work.
GuitarManDan15
Bands are placed based on how popular they are, sounds like your issue is just as much with the musical tastes of today's indiepoprock fans as well as the festival.
