I'll sound like a dick, but I genuinely don't find new music that way, I don't read nme/kerrang/q, I don't listen to bands that come out of x factor/the voice i don't listen to much music played on the radio unless I was already a fan

although music I listen to, a lot comes off recommendations from other people and a lot comes from me checking out bands that are playing festivals

Same as Com Truise. I've got to the point where I don't listen to any radio, read any music magazines, or watch any music TV shows. All the music I discover now is from eFestivals/festival lineups generally. It also helps me form an unbiased opinion on them if they're not forced down my throat by one of the above mediums, because that makes me hate acts.

I can't read anything on NME anymore, either. I was reading a first listen review (most pointless things ever, but anyway) of the new Boards of Canada album, and it dawned on me that I could write to a higher standard than their writers, about 4 years ago.

Edit: And I'm 17.

Spotify and last.fm radio are much better than that will be no doubt

Of Course ;)

As much as we are fed who to listen to, as people have just said, we listen to people on the smaller stages of festivals, so festival bookers control who we will be exposed to. They are the ones that can make or break someones career

Although I hate modern technology with illegal downloads, subscription services like spotify and napster are a great way in finding new music.

For example never heard bastille before and saw them on the iow footage and thought they soubded great. Streamed there album on napster and loved it so purchased there album today.

Same with this forum I think it was mattdavies who said the daughter album was good, checked it out and love it.

I know how much you detest illegal downloads, but I'll keep my ground on that buying albums is a pricey venture that a lot of people my age can't afford, which is the exact reason I have Spotify premium, so I don't feel bad about not buying the albums. Honestly if I could afford it, I'd buy every album that I love

Mark your little photo popped up on facebook when I was browing the hard rock calling page lol

Sometimes I used to pick bands off the local gig list & give them a listen & if I liked them I would pop along to the gig because they'd only be about £5 or 6

We dont really ever get small loacal gigs here, we get Kasabian in a few weeks, JLS headlining the concert night in a few weeks, and The Script in a few weeks. We had Oasis just before they broke up (like a week before) but we dont get small acts...like Passenger ;)

Annoying thing for me is, despite living near Sheffield and being close enough to Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham, Birmingham etc., I can't drive, or get trains back after gigs, or stay the night on a weekday because of college, so if a tour doesn't come to Sheffield I have to go wherever the band play on a Friday/Saturday, and hope I know someone there whose floor I can sleep on. Hard times.

I live in Stoke which is basically under an hours drive to Manc/Brum/Wolves so I just drive most places now, used to have to train/hotel before which was a bit of a chore.

One week (pre car) my feet just ached off because I did Monday: Kings of Leon in Manchester, Tuesday: Neil Young in Nottingham, Wednesday: Blur in Wolverhampton then Friday a local gig followed by Sunday: Take That in Manchester again.

Where I live we haven't really got a big venue but The Sugarmill is quite good for up and coming bands, I saw Kasabian for £2 there for example.
