Glastonbury alcohol email?

My initial reaction to this email was to be unimpressed.

I'm not too keen on timing or style and I'm wondering what the cause is.

More than anything it feels a bit half-arsed. An email two weeks out; a lack of clarity on whether there's been a change of policy; the mention of being the only festival that allows you to bring in alcohol.

Is this aimed at those bringing in booze to sell? I can't say I've noticed that being any more of a problem in recent years (indeed I've seen very little of it)

If it's to try and persuade people to drink less then I'm assuming the bars will be following suit? Not sure how that will go down.

Sack trolleys etc. are practical. In the past I've carried drink for groups of 10+ on one - under these rules we could just carry a crate each and load the trolley with camping gear and bags, which is much less practical because they're not a uniform shape i.e. it will have no impact on the amount we bring in, just how we do it.

In summary; what's the point?

It's a problem at all festivals that run this system - the festival issues the wristband but the WBC run the bars, so if the festival issue the wristband to someone underage and WBC get caught serving them it's the WBC that get fined and not the festival. Unless the WBC can completely trust the person issuing the wristbands - and when it isn't someone that's working for WBC that's very hard - then they are right to check even if someone has a wristband.

This was just posted on the Facebook page:

In reference to the email about alcohol that went out to Glastonbury 2013 ticket holders this morning, my personal preference is for people that come to our festival to drink much less!

However, Glastonbury remains the only major festival that allows people to bring their own alcohol in, and you are still OK to bring your own alcohol through the gates, providing it’s just for your own use (whether it’s on a trolley or not).

For further discussion after this years fest' but I reckon this is a sign of things to come. I can see a future where no alcohol can be brought in but perhaps cans/boxes of wine sold on site possibly limited to one per ticket. Enjoy it while you can people!

me too but I think we are barred, unless you look really young for your age, you won't be allowed one.

After all it says "We are also trialling a 'Challenge 21 wristband scheme'. This means that if you look under 21........."

Unless we start arguing that this policy is also ageist like the who can carry the most one maybe? :sarcastic:

See, I read this completely differently! I was excited as thought "ooh so we can save some pennies and take some of our own into the pyramid stage and the like". The reason I thought that is because of the wording of "only main fest to let people BYO", and because in my experience of IoW you can take alcohol in but not into main staging area I thought that was the difference! My excitement turned to confusion! Nay mind - collapsible trolley is staying in the kit still then! ;)
