strangetown
I think theres a collective panic around The Emirates now. Couple of the forums are spitting fire over the lack of investment in a striker. Might be alone on this but I think the 40,000,001 was seen as a bit "loadsamoney" by the Anfield top brass. It was seen as a smug provocation. Whether it was a balls up based on false leaks from an agent or otherwise is irrelevant. Not that it matters, but the two clubs had a fairly healthy and cordial relationship. This has been soured somewhat. Thus my irtowards gasbags like John Cross.[/quote More than a couple of forums not happy but in all honesty it's been like this for the last 5 years with empty promises and poor excuses for under investment. As supporters we've been mugged off for ages with high ticket prices and spoon fed pr bollocks every May just before ST renewal. Agree that the relationship has usually been cordial but you did sell us Jimmy Carter so we owe you one.

pink_triangle
I just couldn't get excited about the Wales V Ireland game, Im not really into the concept of friendlies so close to the start of the football season. I only wish I had put my money where my mouth was and backed the inevitable 0-0 draw.
eFestivals
Rickie Lambert, what a star. I'm well chuffed for him. Rooney, one hour of nothing. Lambert, one minute of everything.

eFestivals
Pleased for Lambert too - but one header against a non-league outfit (insert winky smiley thingy here) and a fluffed virtual open goal in an otherwise meaningless friendly is nothing to get over excited about.True.But people doubted that Lambert was good enough for League One. He proved them wrong.People doubted that Lambert was good enough for the Championship. He proved them wrong.People doubted that Lambert was good enough for the Prem. He proved them wrong. Not only did he prove them wrong about the Prem, he ended up as the top English goalscorer last season.OK, it's only soton and that makes a difference. But it's still one hell of a good story, nicely topped off by scoring the winning goal with his first touch on his international debut - and against Scotland. For a player who was going nowhere at 25, it must be a dream come true. eFestivals
Until he does it again there's still going to be doubt.I think his consistency thru all those levels should remove most of the doubts, particularly as his play is more about intelligent moves than speed or out-and-out skill.I'm guessing that he won't hit the same heights this season, as he's tending to play further back than he used to; he's getting on, plus the doubts on how he'd do in the prem had other players come in and take away much of his previous role. This time last season there were plenty posting here (perhaps you, I forget) saying they doubted he'd cut it in the Prem. However he does this season I reckon he's got past that, even if he never gets another kick in an England shirt (cos he wouldn't have had that chance yesterday if others hadn't have been crocked). While he's not the best player in the world, he's no less than some of the other players on the pitch for England yesterday. LondonTom
I think what that England game proved last night if anything is that going for players who want to be there and are in form is a much better idea than going for the big name stars who want to get some press coverage and not get injured. Good to see Rickie Lambert get his goal really. Must have been unbelievable feeling for him! Hate Southampton but I'd love to see him stay in goal scoring form this season. (Just behind Big Andy ) Personally I've been thinking about how we select players, why not do it based on stats from the Opta index or something? A bit like for TeamGB you have to meet a minimum qualification in the run up to any tournament? I know its a team sport and that, but it'd work just as well as a managers whim at the time and you'd at least get players in form playing which would be a start Also I'd bring back the home nations tournament again for every non major tournament year. Got to be better than playing pointless friendly after pointless friendly. Plus the other home nations can clearly turn it on when they have a point to prove against the English. eFestivals
I haven't seen a replay but from the view I had I'd be very surprised if the offside call was correct.Am sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong?I have; it wasn't; you're not. The Nal
Cool. Delighted for Lambert. Just saw the goal there. Great header. Glad I missed the Wales match by the sounds of it.
TheGayTent
Meaningless friendly or not, still surprising England get no where near selling out for a game against the Auld Enemy. Particularly when you factor in how long it's been since we've played them.
TheGayTent
Anyone seen Robbie Savage's bbc article about players engineering transfers? Nothing surprising about it but unusual to see anyone admitting it goes on (albeit from a recently retired player)

TheGayTent
You could only get tickets if you had a FAN number that had brought tickets before for a game at the new Wembley. I guess they wanted to keep trouble away really. Shame really, as it could have got people into England games again. (And that keeping the Scotish out of the home seating.)
