No, it's more about interceptions, pressing and cutting off space. Tackling is for if any of that fails or the DM is trying to stop a quick counterattack while the defenders are out of position.

I do rate Fellaini, it just pisses me off how last season all the pundits were raving about how he was dominating defences with his strength and aerial ability when that is neither his game and half the time when he was played forward to do that he was a waste of space.

I can appreciate both points of view - Fellaini isn't consistent enough for me to be a regular in a side challenging for the title. Plus, I think Man Utd already have a better player than Fellaini in Fellaini's preferred position.

You don't have to be a great tackler to be a very effective so called 'DM'.

I think Carrick has done it against the best Premier League teams. Possibly struggles against the top 5 or 6 European teams but then so do the rest of Man Utd's first XI.

Fergie didn't players in more than 60 Champions League games if he didn't think the player was capable of the task set.

Inconsistently against the best Prem teams. He's had displays but I still think he's been found wanting at times when the other top Prem teams are on form. And I wouldn't say just the top 5 or 6, he's struggled against the likes of Benfica as well (and did he play in the Bilbao games?).

The way man utd play were more often than not going to be outplayed in midfield, that's been happening for many a year.

United more often than not play with 2 wingers and most other teams play with 3 midfielders in the middle. So of course there going to get outplayed I'm midfield, this didn't seem to worry

European a funny one but 3 finals in 5 years isn't to shabby a record, we did that which most acknowledge to be a weak midfield.

Carrick has been really really solid in the last few years. Its his forward passes that do it.

These sort of stats actually do matter and do tell a story. Obviously you have to have players who can do something with these forward passes mind you!

*cough* Arsenal.

More really good stats here.

I don't think you'd find many managers objecting.

I think the aggressive 4-2-4 wasn't used much in Europe?

I also think that Man U could do that for longer because of Fergie's influence and habit. I'm convinced something needs to either change or break eventually.

It did amuse me last season how all the pundits and journalists who'd been slagging him off for years suddenly decided that he's now one of the best midfielders in the world and it's ridiculous he's not compared to the likes of Xavi and Pirlo (who they never talked about before the 2012 Euros), when last season he was only slightly improved on the previous 2.
