I think that season the damage was already done. The hard work was effectively done by beating Man Utd twice which effectively game Liverpool a 6 point head start. Dropping stupid points to average sides was nothing to do with Ronaldo.

Its a unique moment that little speech from Rafa. Both sides taking pleasure from it.

Utd fans love to characterise it as a "rant" (as above again, yawn) and use it to poke fun at him.

I personally see it as a courageous and necessary thing. Not easy for a Spaniard with less than full fluency to go up against that bollix.

With the season nearly over and Lerner promising to make a statement, word going around today is Phil Anschutz is going to be the new owner with other backers involved too.

He certainly has experience in football and you would imagine he would appoint the right people so I hope this is true.

Only negative is that he is 74. And with great investment means should he die someone has to continue to finance that.

Perhaps the historical reason why the Villains (or indeed the blue noses) have struggled to attract investment despite being located in Britain's "second" city is because Britain does not follow Zipf's Law. Zipf's Law basically states that a city's population is inversely proportional to the city's rank among other cities in it's country. I.e. the biggest city is roughly twice the size of the second biggest city, and three times the size of the third, etc.

However, the population around Birmingham is only a quarter of the population around London.

The theory is that Birmingam is too small when compared to the "first" City and therefore doesn't act as the hub that it should. The city of Birmingham isn't the thriving economy that a potential investor would be attracted to tap into.

That's an investor who at some point is looking at a return on his investment. The City situation is fairly unique in that their investors are injecting large amounts of equity with no want for a return. Or at least no short or even mid term aim for a return. Unlike your Glazers, Hicks/Gilette, or on a much smaller scale Sullivan/Gold.

But the Glazers and Hicks/Gilette invested in clubs in cities with a lot smaller population than London and smaller than Birmingham for that matter. So I dont think the population of Birmingham compared to London is really the reason no one wants to invest in Villa. Sure why did Learner invest in Villa if the population compared to London is an issue?
