Does that mean I can't express an opinion/make a comparison on players/events prior to my interest in the game? Seems odd. I don't limit my opinion to something that I've witnessed live with my own two eyes. Huge variety of other factors should be brought to bear. You said Scholes is the best english midfielder ever. The usual meaning of "ever" is a bit more than "since 1986" or whenever you became interested in the game chief.

On the subject of Scholes, I do wonder how much more he'd be regarded if his England career had been fairly different. Looking at players like Beckham/Gerrard/Lampard, its hard to argue their England career has massively added to the public perception of them.

I reckon Scholes got nowhere near enough credit when he was playing at his peak and then got too much when he actually wound down. Possibly like Pirlo...
