mrtourette
It's an advantage, but it's not the only one that Liverpool have over Man Utd and Man Utd will have advantages over Liverpool that will vary from person to person. It won't be the be all and end all given the circumstances of the two teams, it's not like comparing Man City and Everton.
pink_triangle
If a player has the choice between Liverpool and Utd and it was not about money or being a childhood fan then obviously the prospect of playing in the CL next season gives Liverpool and advantage over Utd. The line being used by Liverpool would be "we have it now and adding you as a player strengthens us so we will be aiming for the title and continued qualification for the CL". It would be very much "join us we are currently pretty good, while Utd are currently pretty shit" Of course this can only be touted if they managed to keep Suarez.. He goes and its a game changer

ThomThomDrum
Its defo not the be all and end all and there is multiple other factors that will obviously come into play, such as what is the current need at the club for the position a player plays and what is the competition likely to be at that position. Who else have the club signed? Who else are they hoping/likely to sign? Is there a history or familiarity between the player in question and the manager/players at the club/ the club itself. The style of football and does it best suit the player.........etc etc But when it comes to CL and if thats a major motivator then a player is likely to choose Liverpool rather than risk a year without it on the gamble Utd come good........... eFestivals
How can anything be guaranteed in Football ? odd post...There's of course no guarantees, but some things will give you a greater likelihood of success than others - like a rock-solid fantastic team as opposed to a middling one.The closer Utd can get to being that rock-solid fantastic team by bringing in rock-solid fantastic players, the more likelihood they have of an instant return to around the top.I just don't think Utd are going to spend enough to give them that high likelihood of success with the players they'll have, because so many of the current squad aren't 'top top players'.Whether LvG will be good enough to make up for that shortfall in player quality we'll get to find out. eFestivals
So if the only thing a player cares about is playing Champions League football then they're more likely to want to play for a team that are in the Champions League than a team that aren't? I don't think anyone can argue with that.I think pink_triangle has been trying to.
mrtourette
I think like me pink_triangle's been arguing against the likelihood that there's a player out there who's sole interest is playing Champions League and he isn't going to be swayed by anything else at all. In that unlikely event then yes Liverpool would have the advantage, I just don't think that's a likely situation though.

TheGayTent
Of course the other question players targeted by both Liverpool and Man Utd will have, is the likelihood of either team finishing in the top 4 at the end of next season. mrtourette
Na, clearly that's not true. What's not been discussed (I don't think) is the players perception of how well (or not) the team interested in signing him are going to do in the Champions League, rather than just the fact that they're in it. Or are you telling me that players are going to be more interested in signing for Dinamo Zagreb, Maribor, Malmo, Slovan Bratislava, etc etc than Man Utd? Bringing it back to Liverpool/Man Utd, Liverpool only have a significant advantage over Man Utd if the very good players they want to strengthen their squad perceive Liverpool as a club that have the ability to go far into the competition. ThomThomDrum
It will be interesting to see if at any point this summer is looks as if Man Utd and Liverpool are going for the same player(s). What will happen in the end of course is that Chelsea or City will end up buying the player just because they can and Liverpool and Utd will be left scrambling elsewhere
TheGayTent
I'm struggling to see what you don't understand about THE ONLY THING they're interested in is playing Champions League football.
