russycarps
Ok you can all breathe a sigh of relief, there were no super duper surprises BUT it was flipping ace. All the usual songs were there but we got God is in the house, love c**tering letter and into my arms for the slowies and the best version I've ever heard of deanna in the encore The crowd were the best I've seen in AGES too. And since when was God is in the house a big crowd singalong??

And since when was God is in the house a big crowd singalong?? Thank God! Glad you had a good one though. I think I made the right decision - I know I was too tired to enjoy it as much as Saturday. I'm not a fan of GITH being a crowd singalong - see my post above. Actually someone shouted out 'Hallelujah!' at the relevant point on Sunday and Nick said 'Fuck you!' All for a singalong in the noisy ones but drowning out that song with tuneless gimps is criminal. Anyway. Did you manage to get up close and personal with himself? Zoo Music Girl
I'm not gonna get into my arms am I. :'( He does love it, you know. That and GIITH are probably the two slow ones I've seen him do the most in all of the gigs I've been to. I haven't seen 'Are You The One' though and I like that more now. The lyrics are just sublime. I'm hoping for Sunday he'll ditch out the 'hits' except for FHTE and throw in some treats. Edited October 29, 2013 by RebeccaD
russycarps
It was ok, I do think he enjoys doing it, as there is a lot of audience interaction with it, but meh I'd happily see it dropped. Tupelo was a massive highlight again. As was jubilee street. Hiding all away was great too, so much better than on the record, crowd was really going nuts at the end of it singing there is a war coming We real cool was the only one I didn't enjoy much. The new one didn't really grab me again either
Zoo Music Girl
Not that I don't trust Russy implicitly but here's the setlist from that good old website: We No Who U R Jubilee Street Abattoir Blues Tupelo Red Right Hand Mermaids From Her to Eternity West Country Girl God Is in the House Love Letter Into My Arms Higgs Boson Blues Hiding All Away The Mercy Seat Stagger Lee (Fred Waring & His Pennsylvanians cover) Push the Sky Away Encore: We Real Cool Deanna Give Us a Kiss

I think they just ploughed through to the 'war coming' bit after not one verse came out correct. Ah well. Was gonna ask if you liked the new one any more - that's a shame. carlosj
Thanks for the update RebeccaD, yeah, the sing along would have killed it, but not as much as Russy's updates :-)
russycarps
Yeah sorry about that, the seat was missing so I was just sat on the porcelain rim, horrific Before into my arms he said "do you want another one of these or something a bit livelier" and everyone cheered so we got that one rather than Jack the ripper or papa I suspect
Zoo Music Girl
There does seem to be an element of flexibility in the set - on every night he's asked for an opinion on what to play next at least once, within reason. Scruffy just needs to get down the front and squeal 'Into My Arms' like a girl. Shame you didn't get Papa - it was ace. He led the people down the front to keep up a 'woah, woah' behind his singing. Bit cheesy but really worked. I love Ripper just as much but nice to have something different too.
russycarps
Yeah I would have preferred papa but you can't really complain about into my arms I guess! Flawless tour so far. He is defo gonna mix it up for koko, he'll be getting a bit sick of a lot of these songs by Sunday surely....
Zoo Music Girl
Yeah I reckon. He's got the night off tonight - I think he's earned it! No idea how he pulls performances like that out of the bag night after night. Leaves far younger performers miles behind. I think you're right. The only songs I definitely want him to keep in are JS, FHTE and HBB and the rest I'm happy to be up for grabs. Do you reckon the set will be the same length? russycarps
they have to be guaranteed to be played right? I suppose only eternity is a doubt. I've really no idea about sunday. Does it start at 9? I'll be happy with just one single rarity!
Zoo Music Girl
I think Eternity will be perfect in an intimate setting though. Who am I kidding - it's always perfect. It's far and away my favourite moment of each gig but I'm just obsessed with that song. I don't think there's a support is there? So I'd say it will start earlier than 9. Tell you what though, I'm ecstatic and relieved that I have tickets. Sitting at home last night while he was playing round the corner was a special kind of torture. Would have needed a whole bottle of gin to survive next Sunday night at home. Next time if he does three nights I'll just buy tickets to all of them from the start I reckon. No point lying to myself that I won't want to go! Could just take a sober day in the middle.
CaledonianGonzo
Hopes are fairly high for a few mid-period slowies when he plays in Edinburgh on Friday.
russycarps
Hopes are fairly high for a few mid-period slowies when he plays in Edinburgh on Friday. a near certainty I'd say. Looks like they've got about 6 rehearsed and you'll get 2 or 3.
Osama Jim Laden
He was brilliant last night.. Would also have liked papa but the crowd wanted the slowy.. Deanna rocked my b*llocks, great version.. Agree that jubilee street could be the new stagger lee, great energy..

Not too many phones held aloft either. Or that's the impression I got from where I was. Deanna was bloody ace, I felt like the whole band really enjoyed it last night. Mercy seat was the best I've seen in a while too. jubilee street leaves you breathless Edited October 29, 2013 by russycarps

Still great though.. Would've loved Sad Waters but God Is In The House was a nice surprise.. Stagger Lee is brilliant, always will be but it needs re-energising, drop it for Saint Huck.. Zoo Music Girl
I'd go for Saint Huck over Stagger Lee, deffo. It would suit his current confrontational performance style beautifully. Wouldn't mind hearing Sad Waters myself as well. That one seems quite an unusual choice.
russycarps
I'd take John Finns Wife over stagger lee too. Seems like a good replacement. It's great on the live seeds album
