Nick Cave

Midnight Man

Acoustic is way too small when we're dealing with an act that headlines quite a lot of festivals they do and grab prominent slots at the others.

At a minimum I could see him going down to John Peel or maybe Park at his own request for a stripped back set but I really don't see either and I think, should he play, it'd be his usual slot.

Smaller. About two thirds the size?

Yet so see what you think of the album, cj.

I haven't listened to it on vinyl yet. I rated it from the film, and think it's a grower but for a couple of reasons I've held back from listening to the record so far.

However, I thought that the music and style follows on from their last album, not in a derivative way, but evolving.

it is a proper good album, had a good few plays on Apple Music this week.

I object to paying £20 for a single disc vinyl though or I'd have bought it the other day when I was in HMV. Our local indie isn't stocking it other than special orders and they want the same price. It is a great record and as others have said, gets better with each listen.

Sadly Sausage Party wasn't all that - I'll have to seek out the Cave movie still i guess...

Coincidentally I went to the cinema the next day (I'm not weird - I've got a pass and I've not been for a while) to see Hell or High Water.

Anyway, during the opening credits it scrolled up 'Soundtrack by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis'. It's a kind of modern Western so there's lot of guitar and violin, plus a bit of singing.

Anyway, you might want to check that out (the soundtrack or the film - the film is very good and I can see why they wanted to be involved).

I'm thinking I need to get a Nick Cave CD for the car as I'm seriously missing something here - where do I start though?

Hi. I know its a bit obvious but there was a Best Of released years back that is still widely available.

He has done plenty of great stuff since but that is a useful primer as has some of the lovely, emotional and also rackety stuff on there.

p

Rings of Saturn has grown on me massively. Still doesn't touch the final triumvirate but a lot better than I first thought.

i love that song! one of my favourites - not really getting people saying it's one of the weaker tracks (although the whole album is so strong i'd also struggle to name a track that is weaker)

You see the film?

No, i arrived back in Moscow at 0430 that morning, after an overnight flight, got a message from my colleague that there was a spare ticket if i wanted it, but decided that i has i hadn't seen my wife for 2 months, i'd better skip it and be domestic. Was asleep by about half nine anyway.

Didn't think you were a fan tbh. Dunno why.

Im not, youre correct. The background to the record is so compelling I gave it a whirl. Utterly different to the bombast of (my perspective) his usual stuff. This reminded me of Laughing Stock, i.e. ace.

Thought so. Not much I vehemently disagree with you and nal that I've seen so cave sticks out with you both.

Give Boatman's call and push the sky away a whirl if you like this. Think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Especially with the former.

The production on this record click with me unlike anything else I've heard from him.

Did it recently. Confirmed Henry's dream as his best for me. Also how much I've wrongly underrated the good son.

really? last time I played the good son I revised it downwards! I havent played his back catalogue in a long time, so who knows how things will place next time.

Your funeral my trial was threatening top spot last time round.

Aye. Sorrow's child, weeping song and hammer song and - hitherto totally under my radar - Lament are all excellent. Can't believe how much I've underestimated lament previously. It's still not up at the top but I had it just above Nocturama befoere. It's muh better than that.

YFMT's highs definitely amongst the best he's ever done, but I don't think it's as consistent as Henry's Dream or Tender Prey.

I'm going to have to play the good son on my way home, I cant even really remember how lament goes!

That's actually one of the ones I skipped, I've only listened to it once before but went through it yesterday and enjoyed it a lot more. I can't see it touching NMSWP/Tender Pray but you never know with Cave. He's so consistent.

Henry's dream or good son? If you skipped Henry's dream then your soul is eternally damned.

Henry's Dream! It just didn't click with me when I listened to it, I did like it this time though. I find some of his albums (Tender Pray, Let Love In, Skeleton Tree) are instantly lovable and click straight away. Taking NMSWP though, for example, I didn't think much of it at first but it's slowly grown into my favourite of his. I'm going to give Henry's Dream another go tomorrow.

Papa Won't Leave You, Henry was the first Nick Cave song i heard (out of randomly just sticking on the first song from one of his albums) and remains my favourite, along with Henry's Dream probably being my favourite album (although that changes constantly). don't think i've actually listened to all of his stuff though so reckon i'll have to have a marathon sometime soon

I agree on NMSWP. Especially towards the end. Took me a while but last time I listened to it I really enjoyed ll of it. Used to get a bit fed up of it near the end with it being so long.

Probably my favourite. Always between that and Tender Prey but they are so different anyway. And PTSA and Skeleton Tree are up there now. It's amazing to love an artist who is still doing such great and challenging work at this stage in their career.

Henry's Dream has never been a favourite for me though. I'm not keen on the production albeit that the songs are great.
