Got my ticket the night they came out. The three headliners are pretty much the best I could hope for (established rock act - Green Day, British up and comer - Biffy, nostalgia - Eminem). The sub-healiners are also ridiculously strong. I think had NIN and System been headlining a lot of people would still have been happy enough but they're an added bonus.

Also love the undercard on the main stage mostly. BMTH, Frank Turner, Fall Out Boy, Editors and Twin Atlantic.

I will admit the rest of the main stage acts and other stages aren't all the my tastes but I perceive as weak. Still, the top of the card is as strong as I've seen it as long as I've been going. Very excited.

Stewarding (along with loads of other fests). Just put in shift requests to absolutely completely and utterly emphasise that I need to see NIN and can't miss that for a shift. Most likely I'll be able to get Friday evening off as well. Even my NIN fanboism can't justify £200 for just them, SOAD, Tomahawk and Editors in terms of bands I'd pay for a tour date.

If I'd ended up getting a paid job this summer I wouldn't have bothered. Usually do 2 fests/summer and EOTR + Bestival would have got the nod this year. The lineup is mostly cack, the lower stages are far less appealling than ever before, and after Truck last year I'd prefer to do at least one smaller one.

Not so far, but this is the first summer I've done it, 2 down, 3-4 to go. Most years I've been working so I've spent money and booked holiday for 2, maybe 3. Had jack-all to do this year so stewarding 5-6 and only paying all-out for Bestival.

Came back from Latitude yesterday, and I did feel I'd missed out on a fair bit from sleeping/aching post-shift, but between fuel, food and booze I probably spent ~ £60, which isn't much more than I'd spend in a week pissing about elsewhere, so it was definitely worth it. I wouldn't have been able to spend on more than 2 this year, or 1 if I'd ventured to isolated places like Latitude/Bestival, and that would have meant spending the rest of my summer miserable.

I reckon it's a good way to get to do a lot of fests in over a summer, or to justify one if there's not a lot going on you want to do (eg. Reading when there's only a couple of bands to your taste), but there'd be no point doing it if you didn't get to do the fun stuff around shifts, or if you weren't interested in anything at the fest. Last couple of years I considered it for Reading, but 2 years I got a ticket dirt-cheap, and last year I wasn't organised enough in deciding and places had gone before I realised I did want to see enough to justify paying something. I'm kinda expecting the shifts to be miserable at Reading with kids acting like twats, but my ones at 2kTrees and Latitude were mostly pleasant enough.

Yeah I've considered stewarding before but then always thought if I did that I'd probably need to rest too much to enjoy stuff, and end up coming home quite bitter that I'd missed out on stuff. There's that little that interests me at Leeds this year that I probably should have considered it but similarly, I thought it would be full of dealing with shitheads so I didn't go for it in the end. Places like Latitude and Bestival or some smaller festivals I wouldn't imagine being so relentless but as you mentioned, they're not that easy to get to, and a heap of travel before working would probably get the weekend off to a bad start.

When you volunteer at a festival do you have to pay the £200 beforehand and then get it back after? I've seen they do this at some places. I was hoping to volunteer at a couple next year but I wouldn't have the money to do that if I was going to be paying outright for one or two as well. I was hoping to pay for two (eg. Leeds and Glastonbury) and then volunteer at a couple more.
