Arcade Fire

My tuppeny's worth: I think Funeral is absolutely brilliant, possibly album of the '00s. But I was disappointed by Neon Bible and Suburbs (although each has its moments), to the point that I haven't even listened to the new one yet. So I'm definitely of the "they've got worse/less interesting" school of thought.

But they are superb live - saw them at Ally Pally a few years back and they were great (even in that shitheap of a venue); and then again at the Hackney Empire in '10, which was, unsurprisingly, even better.

They'd be a good headliner. There aren't any other youngish bands that I can think of, off the top of my head, that are big enough to realistically headline that I'd rather have.

Just now on 6music, Mark Radcliffe has also just said he'd heard about Arcade Fire to headline Glastonbury from insiders.

Please let all of this be true!

I can confirm that there's a "insider" rumours going strongly around the music biz about this - it's what we'd picked up on a couple of weeks ago.

But I can also confirm that these "insider" rumours are often no better informed than the guesses being made in places such as this - because they're often a load of rubbish (as proven so often in the past).

Whether Radcliffe has a better handle on the origin of that gossip I've no idea, but we've so far not managed to trace it anywhere interesting ourselves. It could (by itself) be just a wild rumour.

Then again, this is one of those rumours where something about it 'feels right', so we were always believing this one more likely of having substance than others that are going around.

(the others that are going around are all the names you'd expect, with many contradicting others of them).

I'd put their first three on an equal standing, I don't think Funeral is considerably better than Neon Bible or The Suburbs. Obviously it has their three big live favourites and a couple of other corkers but the next two are just as impressive. But then again I think Radiohead peaked at The Bends/OK Computer (and they haven't dated particularly well) and got progressively duller and shitter since, so there.

Also their fans rival Radiohead fans as the biggest shower of c**ts on planet earth.

Let me just stop you there. Nobody rivals Radiohead fans as the as the biggest shower of c**ts on Planet Earth.

Loads of people have gone off Radiohead though and think they've got worse. Doesn't mean they are right.

Correct - they are indeed wrong. ;)

The difference with Arcade Fire is that almost everyone thinks they've got worse. Most people I know put Funeral as their best album - as I suspect most people on here do as well. Radiohead's best album oscillates between albums 2,3,4,(not so much 5 or 6) and 7 dependent on who you speak to

The bruce sprinsteen fans were pretty intense on here the other year it must be said....

the "Rod Stewart fans" that posted on here about ten years back were just as intense.

But strangely they came from just one IP address. And strangely there was a reason to think there was a business connection between the location of that IP address and Rod himself.

I wonder what the truth of things was there...?

But in fairness theres more than a whiff of bullshit from their latest tour. VIP packages with made up VIP laminates, pre show canapes and "crowd free" merchandise shopping - so you don't have to interact with the rest of the vermin while you buy their merch.

Thats just livenation guff for you. They do it at all their big gigs when they can.

I dunno, most people I know think the Suburbs is excellent. Don't know anyone who thinks the second album is their best mind.

I love Arcade Fire, but without Funeral they would just be another band.

my thoughts exactly. if Funeral hadn't been their debut they'd be viewed in a very different light these days. nobody wants to admit it, but we're all just hoping they'll replicate Funeral again with each album (something they couldn't be further away from doing)

do you remember just how much I got slated after the event for saying he was dull?

Nowadays that seems to be just about the all-round opinion.

yep, they were great days on here

I cant wait for when radiohead actually do headline again. This place is going to be ace in the months before, and the months after if (when!) you say something similar about their beloved band... :sarcastic:
