I would say RATM in 2008 as crowd was right up to food stands at back and behind them, as I remember standing behind the gap at the top discussing with this guy that you could probably crowd surf from that point the crowd was so condensed.

Pendulum in 2008 in the NME tent was a bit scary too but good fun as you just had to hold on to the people next to you and bounce as a whole lol

I've only been 2 years but Foo Fighters were easily the biggest crowd I've ever seen at the festival (Reading) - I was literally at the very back, near where they sell the lineup poster and this was the closest I could get! I did arrive just as they came on stage but it was still heaving!

Deadmau5 has easily pulled the largest Dance Stage crowd when he played late afternoon.

Dizzee Rascal's crowd in 2010 was huge, lots of people there for him & The Libertines on after. Plenty of the crowd left or the NME tent for ES/Pendulum but plenty also headed in for The Libs

Really interesting reading people's different recollections and perceptions of crowd sizes. I think so much of it is down to where you stand and what's going on around you!

For my money, in recent years Radiohead, RHCP and Foos last year are the biggest I can remember.

To be honest, with the capacity of Reading now so much more than when I first started going, when the crowd gets really big at the main stage it just spoils things. I ended up stuck in a dead zone for the sound at the Foos last year and it ruined it.

(As a result my expectations for the main stage headliners are actually pretty low this year — all the most memorable headliners for me in recent years have been less-fancied bands on smaller stages. 2manyDJs and Klaxons both spring to mind.)

MIne was def SOAD 2003, that was before the days of the second barrier though. That crowd was so busy the push forward actually broke the first barrier before they even finished the first song, they had to stop the band and take a girl away in an ambulance as she had been cushed under foot, then they had to repair the barrier before System could continue.
