I fear this too

Kings of Leon, Metallica, Mumford and sons would be the strongest trio they've had in years

you think? i'd say even 2013's headliners are stronger. Metallica aren't really that big of a pull these days due to constantly being around, KOL aren't the pull they were in 2009, and Mumfords... well they'll probably go back to inexplicably conquering the world again

Mmmm Tasty stuff that Melvins opted to go for Metallica. A bit of Glasto copy cat stuff going on here.

On a more serious note, genuinely its a convincing booking, and I'll be there. Cannot wait to see Metallica at Reading despite the ludicrous amount of times they've done UK festival slots recently.

I think with some of the rumours floating around, especially the Libs, Reading is shaping up to be a pretty decent place to be in 2015.

Where's Enter Shikari or Crystal Castles though?

This may have been mentioned but why are Metallica a uk festival exclusive? Did sonisphere last year, IOW won't have them, they've done glasto, T in the park is Scotland so a uk exclusive means f all.

I can only see download wanting them but DL has a pretty strong line up...just seems silly to me!

It's just something they can use to sell tickets, don't credit the R&L-going demographic with the intelligence to think through things like that.

Mumfords won't play and are as much of a R+L band as Coldplay so pack it in with that nonsense.

i don't want to say 'they are a R+L band' and then eat my words when they don't headline, but... i wouldn't totally write them off. they may be a stretch but if offered them i think the organisers would definitely go for them. they'd be foolish not to

as for Metallica, i agree that their booking kind of hangs on if they release a new album and if it's any good. if there's no new album it seems like a pretty bland booking with nothing new to add from 2008, and if the new album's shite then it's 2008 + some shite new songs

Not a terrible announcement after all that! Having seen Metallica at Glasto for the first time, it isn't something thats going to get me to buy a ticket right away but would contribute well to a decent overall lineup :P

I'll reserve judgement for the fuller lineup, but its the right sot of direction.

Why do so many people think Courteeners are there again? They tend to alternate between V and Reading and this album hasn't really done anything to justify being NME headliners, never mind move even further up the bill.

Apparently they said something about playing Leeds again next summer at their gig there a couple of weeks ago.

Refused and Metallica are unlikely to be against each other are they? That'd be two headliners for me if I went

Depends, Refused are likely to be the only punk headliner on The Pit so may have the least crossover with Metallica.

That said I imagine those two will be the two headliners with the most appeal for older punters, so maybe they'll keep them apart.

Ah right! After how desperately we clung onto Dave Grohl's "week at Wembley" comment I shan't read too much into that - these things can be misquoted so easily, after all - but it certainly could be a pointer. Thanks.
