I think it was more to dispel the claims by some that there aren't enough female acts to fill a festival bill, or that '80% of female rock acts are shit'. R&L are just getting used as an example because, after Glastonbury, they're the biggest festival in the UK and arguably the most diverse too (again, after Glastonbury). People are calling out other festivals both here and oversea now too.

That wasn't the claim, it was that there are lot less female alternative acts than male ones. Just listing every act with a female member doesn't prove anything either way, you'd have to look at how many of those acts are actually touring, what they have since they last played, weed out the ones that would never get booked and also look at acts who have done exclusive deals with other fests :P

I think the fact its such a good lineup regardless of gender proves its bollocks :P

Got to agree. There can only be a few solo female singers at least that could realistically play Reading, & the the ones that spring to mind would only play mainstage &/or cost a lot, & at a push:

Ellie Goulding would be a sub, likely for V

Charli XCX would be very high NME

Marina & the Diamonds?

La Roux which haven't heard from for a while

etc & all have pretty male dominate backing bands

Beyonce, GaGa, Rihanna (Adele?) would be a headline & not happen unless R&L really take their bookings in a new direction, but the UK already has festivals suited for them.

As with most walks of life the music industry probably suffers form institutionalised sexism, but I'm not sure why R&L would be held accountable given that there have been plenty of female performers/artists in the past. The lack of them this year is more likely to be coincidental based on who is available/in demand rather than any deliberate sexism on their part, one year is not enough to start throwing accusations around, although in general it is a worthy indication of the effects of sexism in the industry and a valuable point to raise.

Can anyone be bothered counting up the female/part-female acts from previous years to compare? Acts like Crystal Castles, The Joy Formidable and Azealia Banks have been repeatedly booked, R&L aren't averse to having strong females amongst their house acts.

Are Pussy Riot still in prison? because if they are I don't see them headlining the pit at this hypothetical festival :P

Nah, they're on day release on bank holiday weekend in August. It's lucky really.

Sadly, they're only appearing at Reading as they gots 2 go by 2 jail
