Where is Greenman? Not one I've really looked into.

Four of my mates are going to Bestival, two of them as well as Glastonbury and the other two as an alternative because they don't want to wait for the resale. I am tempted but the dates are awful for me so am holding out.

Greenman is in the Brecon Beacons, in Wales. The site is ringed by mountains and a river runs through it. It's really spacious, with a lovely main stage, and a few other tents. After hours, there's a surprisingly decent array of stuff going on. The line-up is usually fairly strong - bands such as Bon Iver, Midlake, Flaming Lips, Explosions In the Sky, Joanna Newsome, have headlined in recent years. It's such a lovely, relaxed place. I can't speak highly of it enough, although my ex and I pretty much broke up there, it holds pretty sad memories for me and she goes every year, so I suspect it's one I'll never return to now...

That does sound lovely. Another one to consider then!

Sad for you though :( Is the site too small to avoid her?

Ah no, it's not due to any animosity or need to avoid her, and it's a couple of years back now. We lived together for three years and she has a now seven-year-old boy, who grew to regard me as his dad over that time. When she goes to Greenman, I look after the little man.

Ah that makes sense. Shame though.

It's ok. I get Glastonbury :)

This thread is now probably at its furthest point yet from its original purpose of 'are the National playing at Glastonbury 2013/4?'! :sarcastic:

I have a fondness for long meandering threads that veer on and off the point though :)

Besides, The National are playing at Glastonbury and we will both be front row and centre.

It's fine, I bow to your superior knowledge of them :)

God, I really hope they are there though. And that they do another London gig as well. That one gig was not enough. Plus I still need to see Abel!

The person who runs The National's forum tipped me a nod and a wink, saying "I'm confident you'll be seeing them round your way in the next 12 months", but I haven't been able to get them to expand on that suggestion. I think there'll be something in this country in the summer, I've no idea whether that'll be a short tour or some festival appearances. I'd think they'd play Glastonbury, but then if ever the time was right, a month after the release of their biggest album to date, last year was it, and they didn't play. So, what do I know?!

Well, fingers crossed anyway! At least we know they're in Europe.

And you're seeing them either way!

They played Glasgow and Edinburgh in the same week they played Reading & Leeds in 2011, so maybe something similar next year, Glasto and a few other dates in the uk?

I get the feeling they're 'bigger' in Europe than in England. They headlined Rock Wertcher in Belgium last year, and I think were quite high up at Roskilde too? I think this may be why Glastonbury didn't happen - they thought they could get more high-profile slots in Europe. I don't know.

I don't think they'd let anyone down if they headlined the Other Stage. With six albums to draw on, and the depth and quality of their material, as demonstrated in the two hour set at Ally Pally, they've got the quality. Whether or not they'd draw a big enough crowd is debatable, especially if up againast an established guitar act. Perhaps second on the Other Stage, or second or third on the Pyramid would be ideal. I love the idea of them going on before Arcade Fire!

I really don't know if the black and white sessions were ever released, or whether they were intended as free downloads.

Also, if the obsession is beginning to bite, have you seen this?

I've just spent a very enjoyable hour watching the above. Thank you so much, it's a really amazing film. Not just because it's about them either, but it's really beautifully done. But the fact it's about them is a bonus and it's great to see all the footage of them recording and stuff. And Matt talking about his anxieties as a performer, really endeared him to me.

That version of About Today though! Had me in tears! I only heard that song for the first time at Ally Pally and I love it more with every listen now I have the Black and White sessions. Such a good song, the perfect mix of vulnerability and beauty. This band make me ache.

I want to see them again so badly. I looked forward to that gig so much and it was so great but it just went by so quickly and I don't remember it as clearly as I would like and it all feels a bit like a dream now. I really want another gig though as well as a Glastonbury performance. I do want to see them there so much but I think if they're not headlining the crowd won't be great. It concerns me.

Can't believe I missed the thread for this long. Just want to say...

Ally Pally was great. Went on the Wednesday. Loved the length of the setlist and the now incredible back catalogue they have to draw from. They played Available for Sad Songs which is just brilliant. New album sounded ace.

On that point, I really think TWFM is up there with the previous three. I have listened to it through pretty much every day since it came out. Definitely my go to album now. The last two songs are incredible - Pink Rabbits and Hard to Find. So is I should Live in Salt, Don't Swallow the Cap and Slipped. Just in case it manage to slip past anybody HARD TO FIND IS BRILLIANT. "I don't know why we had to lose / the ones who took so little space / they're still waiting for the years / to cover what we can't erase / I'm not holding out for you / I'm still watching for the signs / if I tried you'd probably be / hard to find."

Also, someone was asking about the older albums. I like Sad Songs - but it's a little hit and miss. Still it has Available and Lucky You which are two of the best they've ever done. Cherry Tree EP is also brilliant and the Virginia EP (earlier version of Slow Show, good cover of Springstein's Mansion on the Hill and some good live tracks).

And they definitely need to play Glastonbury. Headlining the Park on the Friday. Thanks.

I'll stop stealing your thoughts when you stop pushing these highly addictive The National goodies on me Mr Tambourine Man :)

Oh, now a Dylan reference, too.Swoon... Be still my beating heart.....

Glad you enjoyed the film and About Today. Such a beautiful version.

And I feel entirely the same as you about Ally Pally. Hence the ridiculous pilgrimage to Denmark!
