The National

Now I'm definitely coming, it would be rude for them NOT to play.

Unless of course my shift clashes with their set.

That would be the height of rudeness.

Nailed on, I reckon.

I'd feel dreadful for you if you had a shift that clashed with them! Are you gunna try in the resale?

Are you really gonna be working it this year then?

I've got a working place sorted, yes. Depending on when the resale is I have a grace period to cancel if I want to. So we'll see!

Missed The National at Glastonbury twive before so I'm hoping this is my time to see them there! :)

Thanks, CHRLY - I'm quietly confident.

Well, I missed it sadly - the heat made me stay at Pyramid for Dead Weather instead. Regret that now. Dog Burger was there and he rates it but he's not objective about The National :P

Can't remember if Scruffy was there or not...? Think he was.

In my opinion they're not a daytime sunshine band. Need them in the dark with a bottle of wine :)

I've always thought they'd headline Other. Just not sure what day. I'm hoping not the Friday.

Can't be the Friday surely against arcade fire, would seem suitable against Metallica but I reckon they'll sub massive attack, will just be getting dark perfect time for them. Even though I'd love them to headline other (because of all the cuts they'll have to make to their set) I can't see it happening

quick dash after their set to avoid MA and watch kasabian with the missus, yeah I could handle that!

That's fantastic news, so pleased for you!

Just got to avoid those clashes now! ;)

I thought they were fucking amazing in 2010 and have since watched it back on youtube and drawn the same conclusion. Granted it was hot and sunny - not really their conditions, but they were superb, Matt was on full deranged form and walked almost all the way to the mixing desk. But then I think they're such a consistent band, so musically adept, that they don't really differ in their level of performance from gig to gig, really; all that changes is the environment you watch them in, and yourself.

I think they've become an even better band since then, too. The new songs have added real depth to the catalogue they can draw on, there's more slide guitar and effects from the Dessners, and Matt has learnt to sing in a new, higher register. After dark at Glastonbury, given a long enough set, they'd be tremendous.

Thought you'd say something like that :)

The 2010 set was good but their 08 Green Man performance was much better.

I don't have good memories of GreenMan but I've often thought that they'd be the perfect headliner for that festival - and I know Greenman put out the feelers to them this year but didn't get very encouraging noises back. They're 'too big', whatever that means, to do Greenman, now.

The headline acts I have seen at GreenMan were great - the sound perfect, the setting drop-dead gorgeous and the the audience attentive. Bon Iver were sublime.

That, along with Neils hints as to why they didn't play last year: I don't like it.

"We're too big for your festival." Shit off then would be my reply.

This isn't a comment as to whether or not it's true by the way.

Green Man isn't Glastonbury though, is it? They can be too big for Green Man but they're obviously not for Glastonbury.

Meh. Booking agents. Very much doubt anyone from the band - or most bands for that matter - would have been involved.

It's the booking agent's job to book the best possible tour, in terms of logistics, finance, target audiences, length of sets and therefore exposure.

Glastonbury may be in our DNA, but it's not sacred to everyone - and The National generally spend 18 months to two years at a time on the road, this would have been one tiny cog in that huge wheel. The National's agent will have been weighing up a slot at Glastonbury, in whatever position, for however long, against headlining in Rome, or wherever they ended up - why wouldn't he or she book the two-hour headline slot in Italy, in preference to the 45 minutes on the Other Stage or whatever Glastonbury offered them?

No but Neil hinted that they didn't play last year due to "demands." And the way it was worded led me to believe they wanted to play higher up than they were offered. You know I love them and think they should be high up personally, but get over yourselves lads!

Why should they?! It's their career.

Play for two and half hours, playing all the songs you love, to a large, appreciative European audience, or go on third on the bill on the second stage at Glastonbury for 45 mnutes? I know what I'd do.

The National deserve to headline Other. They're plenty big enough and everyone who thinks otherwise is just wrong :P

with Metallica now seemingly lined up to headline Pyramid, there's an Other headline slot open. i personally don't think The National are big enough / a big enough pull to do it, but i could be wrong!
