The Nal
Honestly man I think youve missed the point here somewhere. To you their appeal is clearly limited but to the vast majority of people, theyre simply loved. Your usual criteria "too nice" just doesnt apply to something like "Helplessness Blues". Its a droning, deep, meandering, complex record. Bitter and oblique in parts. Not as hummable. Not as attractive to the "Starbucks" music appreciation crowd youre not a fan of. ian the worm
About 4 years ago I met this nice bloke who played keyboards. I took a punt and gave him a slot on the backstage bar stage. He was good solo. He then persuaded me to attend the band he was playing with the next day. First on in the Accoustic tent? That band were terrible but I felt glued to the ground. I have forgotten their name - thankfully.
The Nal
Given the plethora of high quality 60s originals used in Wes Andreson's soundtracks - Kinks, Stones, The Who, Velvets, etc - that's a pretty sizable compliment.
stardustjunkie
I was made to watch The Kills in 2011. Most. Boring. Band. Ever. Even the girl who was so desperate to see them ended up agreeing that it wasn't brilliant (it was awful). Gorillaz in 2010 were not what I expected at all. They weren't interesting at all, not a headlining set. And I also got dragged to The Vaccines in 2013. One of their many sets apparently, it was on the Pyramid, can't remember what day. I couldn't wait to leave.
lucyginger
Amy Winehouse was, unfortunately, terrible in 2008. My sister and I lasted 5 minutes then wandered off and caught a great band on the bandstand, there were about 20 of us all dancing away. One of my festival highlights. Gorillaz- they were terrible! My friend and I trekked right to the back of the field so we could sit down and see, we lasted 40 mins or so. We only stayed that long because we'd trekked for ages to get there. Trotter Fist
Around 2002 a band called Bobby Conn played the New Band/John Peel tent. The NME had built them up to be the greatest new thing going. They weren't.

Spindles
With Gorillaz it was a combination of factors that led to it failing, imo. There were a fair number of production cock-ups through the show (such as the intro coming on, playing for a minute or so, cutting out and then starting over at the start of the gig) which just led to a general air of confusion as to what was going on at times and a pretty disjointed set for at least the first half. I went there with a positive mindset and just ended up in the middle of lots of people complaining, asking what the hell was going on and leaving. By the time Lou Reed came out and stumbled through a track he'd clearly not heard since he phoned in the vocal it was beyond saving.
russycarps
amazing to think that just 12 months earlier he'd been utterly worshipped while on that stage wonder if he regrets taking that gorillaz gig? Must have soured the blur memory a bit
