What stops people putting down a deposit (said to be the same price as a ticket) and just sacking off the job when they get there?

Nothing stops them - I met some sheepishly packing their gear up on the Tuesday afterwards when our shift started, and about half a dozen names didn't answer when roll call came. I think they get blacklisted from doing that form of voluntary work, but it doesn't take an evil genius to work out how to get round it, if you are so inclined. Generally, I am a relatively sanguine fellow, but consider such folk scumbags. They deprive someone else of the opportunity of going to the festival and working, and what is a fixed amount of work then has to be spread out between those of us who do turn up..

I've applied and registered for a few things and am waiting to hear back whether I'm lucky or not. I admit that my main motivation is not having a ticket but that doesn't mean I'm not prepared to work hard and give something back to the festival. I like the idea of meeting new people and seeing a different side to it as well.

8 hours and 15 minutes - 8 hours of work and 15 minutes for the changeover.

Hoping to volunteer this year but it'll be my first time so I don't get priority.

I can add my mates experience from last year who volunteered for litter picking.

Being in his 40's and a production engineer that went down well and he got driving jobs and so was not litter picking. He even got to drive to back of the stages to arrange rubbish collection.

Although a bit knackered at times he never missed a shift. He got his money back for the ticket for that , free meals and has been invited to do it again this year.
