Festival New Boy

Ive never been to a festival, Im 48 and going to my first one, at T in the Park, this year. My partner was going to be accompanying me, however, despite the fact that we both like the line up, she's heard that it's a bit "tasty" at TITP and attracts a rougher crowd. The only festivals she's been to are both more family orientated ( Latitude and Green Man). I don't know where she's getting her info from but I wanted a to try and do some research and find out what to expect. I don't want to take her some where she doesn't feel safe, but on the other hand, Ive bought the tickets and I still want to go.

Ive been reading the forum before joining to pose my question and you all seem like thoroughly nice people.

Can I get an honest opinion about the atmosphere? The way she describes it, theres going to be mass brawls every night !

Many thanks

I would say you always feel a bit more on edge at titp than you do at other festivals but I feel as long as you don't go looking for trouble the chances of it finding you are pretty slim. Try and convince your wife to go with you as you will both have a great time

Been for a few years and never encountered any trouble, heard of people getting into fights and stuff but when there is such a large number of people there is inevitably going to be a bit of trouble

I definitely wouldn't worry about it i've been with my girlfriend and she thoroughly enjoyed it as well as many of my female friends the trouble is definitely exaggerated in the media but as said there will be a few cases of trouble

As Frank said, not too much trouble in the arena, the odd fight and people throwing cups of pish in the crowds at stages.

Campsite I would avoid, theres too many pissed up idiots with no respect for themselves never mind others, tent thefts, stabbings, fights.

If you do go, either stay off site or in boutique camping and you should be fine.

camped at the back end of green site in 2012 and there was no bother there. think its all random luck of who u get camping in your section. plus camping further away from the arena meant less drunken idiots but u always get 1 or 2. i noticed each time i walked to the arena that the campsites closer to the arena were louder and more "rowdy" but that year i think people were more concerned about the weather and i seen more scuffles in the arena than elsewhere due to pish being thrown etc. my honest opinion is that if u go camping try and be further away from the arena and you are less likely to be involved in anything like that

This is my 5th year, I've camped every time, never experienced any bother. If you're worried, there are quieter areas in the campsite. As Doug85 said, the further you camp from the arena, the quieter it is.

As long as you are friendly with those camped around you, and don't go annoying anyone, you'll be fine. I've never felt like I was in danger or anything at T.

Been 8 times and camped on 5 of those occasions. Never seen any trouble in the campsite and anything in the arena is as minor as you will get, which can only be expected at a large scale event. In general the atmosphere and people at T are really friendly and happy to help each other etc.

Thanks for the replies everyone. It's pretty much down to good luck and keeping your wits about you, I reckon, like a night out in city centre Manchester then. I'm gonna go, and will find a quieter camping spot away from the arena, just hope I can convince the other half. I must admit though, I would be seriously tempted to smack someone I saw throwing piss at me. That's just not funny.

piss being thrown is usually the main reason for a scuffle as generally even people around someone throwing it arent too pleased by it but u always get it and thats not just at T. most other probelms arise because people are too drunk and end up annoying other people which as u say is the same as a typical night out. i really wouldnt let it worry u or the mrs. my mrs enjoys it as long as we camp in the quieter part of camp so she can get some sleep more than anything.

Last year I was walking near the Slam Tent when a girl started vomiting blood, and her husband/boyfriend started going crazy. Some kind of reaction to drugs, but I had to comfort the man while his partner was getting taken away in the ambulance. I think she died. But I still had an absolute ball, despite the incident.

Never see any trouble, yes people get drunk and take drugs but for the amount of people there there's not loads of trouble. Obviously make sure you keep your wits about you when sleeping and putting your valuables as they could be stolen, but this is just a precaution! If you are jolly and up for a good time everyone around you wants to have that too, this will be my 5th T, best festival I've been to in my opinion

In any town of 85000 people you'll get far more incidents than you do at T on any given night. I've never had any trouble or seen any but there are those that attract it and those that look for it. Try and get in the Citizen T if you are concerned, that's quiet and civilized but you do have to tidy up and take your tent home. I've stayed there a couple of times and had a great time but if there's only 2 of you it's not as sociable as the main camp site. There's still parties and such on the go though.

Honestly, don't listen to what the papers and Wikipedia tell you! Before I went to Leeds last year I looked it up and Wikipedia told me that they'd been mass riots, exploding gas canisters and fires across the campsites, there was no problems whatsoever all weekend. They're all just a good laugh, obviously if you act like a dick nobody is likely to be pleasant, but that applies to everything really.

I let the other half read the comments posted on here. I thought they were, on the whole, very positive and its made me more resolute to go. She on the other hand is definitely not going now. The fact that people throw piss is enough to put her off. Oh well, looks like I'm going on my own. Thanks for the responses everyone, see you all there!

No it isn't?! The original post was from somebody who had never been to a festival before and was asking for advice. He also mentioned that after googling the festival he, or his partner came across a lot of stuff about 'neds'. This is something that comes up immediately with Wikipedia, something that I had a very similar experience with last year.
