This neanderthal statement that we're in some way trying to appear "superior" for reading the original fucking text is hilarious.

No one is suggesting anything like that. The original text - the creator's vast sprawling vision - is there if you want clarity or detail. The TV show is IMO one of the best things ever on telly - theres a reason for that. The books are good, innit.

:D

I'm sure theres a poor hoor somewhere that only read the book adaptation of Star Wars and got the hump when some clown told him it might make sense to watch the films too.

There's a greater complexity usually in the books - sometimes that's a good thing, sometimes it makes the books less accessible. I can't get through LOTR, there's too much going on in there for me to take in.

I have read the LOTR, many years ago, and the first 200 pages or so, maybe more, are absolutely horrendous to get through, but after that things pick up and it's great. I dread to imagine how many people have started reading then given up on those books.

That being said, I doubt I'd have bothered had I seen the films first

The blithe/vaguely contemptuous "don't read fiction" statement from Tate is key here. If there was no book, there'd be no show. Ergo, if people never read the book there'd be no show.

Yet the "book readers" are all acting all superior.

:D

Both can exist of course - the tv show is ace, i love it too! But to be so smugly blasé about the core text of a work is just ignorant to me. Say youre just not interested in the book, fine. But don't categorise people who've read the book as simply people with "more time on their hands". Its a bit Fox & Friends.

"Hey, check this loser out. He's reading A Song of Ice 'N Fire! What a c**t!?"

I don't want to take sides, but I must admit I haven't noticed any book readers making personal criticisms of non book readers. Recommending the books isn't acting superior, any more than recommending a good TV show is.

I think people are taking things personally where no judgement has actually been made.

book snobs are worse than music snobs.

I hate being seen reading books that are popular with the masses though.

I read a book once and really enjoyed it. Then I noticed it at a later date was "richard and judys biook of the month" or something. I went into a murderous rage at having read and enjoyed it.

I realise I am part of the problem.

Oi, bog off the thread with your arguing! :P

I read on the train but my kindle is broke so reading on my phone which is tedious - 800 pages of The Goldfinch were hard work, I can't imagine ASOFAI would be any easier on a small screen!

Uni!

Bourgeois pig!

uh uh miner's daughter - strong working class credentials.

plus, I'm Welsh, and therefore common. (But only Welsh people can say this, otherwise it's racist AND superior!)

(Though I've just realised now I've socially excluded people, and censored debate, so bang goes my liberal socialist credibility).

I'm watching it all because the missus loves it and I'm heavily invested in it now, but I have to admit I'm getting more and more disillusioned with it as time goes by. Once you strip away the sex, violence and amazing production, its just a load of disjointed and fairly boring plots acted out by, on the whole, fairly one dimensional characters. 3 and a bit seasons in and I don't feel much emotional attachment with any stories or characters. It's just leaving me a little cold.

I realise I'm on my own with this view though.
