80% of that episode deviated from the story, right?

- Jon never knows Sam met Bran

- Bran and the mutineers

- Brienne/Pod setting out together

- Meereen "battle"

- Jon going to Crasters

- All the hi-jinx with the Others

Am I missing anything?

Whilst I loved the last scene the motivation behind showing it is troubling. What did we learn/gain from this knowledge? It was as confusing as it was enlightening if you think about it.

Yep, I spent most the episode thinking, "have I completely forgotten what happened in the book?"

Just thinking where we are up to in the tv series in terms of the books and what is left for them to cover. I'm only halfway through AFFC, so may have some of this wrong, so please correct.

Jon - still in Book 3, though is the Crasters bit in ADWD? Still haven't had the attack on Castle Black yet though. And Locke is up there now - is this in place of sending the Kettleback?

Sam - Still ASOS, but has to get to Oldtown via Braavos

Arya - Still book 3, though order is a bit wrong, decent plot in Braavos to come

Sansa - still book3 but not much really interesting viewing

Bran - is this book 5?

Brienne - I think its start of book 4, but not much really happens to her in the first half

Tyrion - Early book 3,pt 2 - looks like book 3 will fill out this series.

Jaime/Cersei - tied in with Tyrion in bok 3.

Theon - Racing ahead to book 5?

Dany - now she has Mereen, that's book 3 pretty much done - only exciling Jorah to go, then onto B5

Still no mention of anything happening in the Iron Islands. Not sure if Dorne comes into the TV series outside of Oberyn

Could end up with book 3 and 4 done this season, with chunks missed and then a race through book 5 next season. When's book 6 due out?

Good article here about the differences between the TV show and the books

http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/box-seat/how-game-of-thrones-differs-from-the-books-20140429-37ep2.html

This goes some way to restoring my sanity, after I thought I was suffering from memory loss and couldn't remember what had happened in the books.

HBO have confirmed the Other with the baby at the end of the episode was the Nights King, so theyve even gone past the books as nowhere in the books to date does it confirm that the nights king is still alive.

Not strictly true.

So how does everyone think the series is going so far?

I'm enjoying the Kings Landing side of things, but some of the added scenes are dragging it out for me. Like Arya - I'm sure they didn't meet that many people along the way. Similarly the Wall events are so different that I'm jointly frustrated for them deviating so much, but enjoying the new story.

Thought the scenes in the Eyrie were done fantastically last night though. (Despite Aidan of the wandering accent!)

Also reckon that the guys on the TV thread are going to have one helluva shock come the trial by combat. Looking forward to the reactions the morning after that.

Portrayal of The Mountain was weak last night. Do viewers really -get- how vile this punter is? Never mind how much of a threat he poses. Lining up starving peasants to slaughter was also very confusing. Take it they had all selected "trial by combat" and Big Greg was dealing out the King's justice en masse...

Portrayal wasnt a million miles from Nuclear Man's "DEESTROY SUPERMAN" character from Superman 4. Rubbish.

Think they did a cracking job of the trial by combat last night.

Though a lot more deviation from the books for a lot of the rest of it.

Where do you reckon they'll leave us at the end of the series? Think the final scene will be ole Tywin on the privy.

I pretty sure that we'll meet a very vengeful Stark widow.

Last episode is called "The Children" and the producers have stated that their biggest FX spend is contained within. Whilst the scene with Drogon and the shepherd's child will be included I'm wondering how much it would cost to render Leaf in CGI. Not cheap one would think!?

so it looks like the deviation is deliberate - Jorah could be returning to hook up with Tyrion, and will the Second Sons be take a greater part? They've already been referenced in the TV show a few times.

I reckon it will be Daenerys' wedding at the end.

Ahhh that would explain all the current interest in the Children back story - so it'll end with their appearance? Eidted to add - so the Wights and The Children in the last episode - quality!

Next episode is 55 minute long focus on events at the Wall - or so we're told. I'm unsure how they link Stannis to the battle without any preamble however. Unless this plot line is left for next year somehow?

The last episode stands to be the most detailed of the entire show thusfar by an absolute mile.

This is what needs to be tied up:

- Jamie/Varys plot

- Shae/Tywin

- Hound "death"

- Tyrion and Arya to Essos

- Drogon Unchained

- Stoneheart

- Bran / North of the Wall

Looking at the above there is little time for them to shoe-horn in the 3-Eyed Crow and his pals but one would think that has to happen. The episode is 65 minutes in total I think so theres every chance. "The Children" must be a reference to Leaf and his/her buddies.

I'm wondering will they truncate the Brienne/Stoneheart plot lines into this season's finale?

Think it might be herself and Pod that get strung up... theres nothing else for them to do in order to keep them "present" in the plot line or am I wrong?

Exactly - in the books Brienne fannies around for all of AFFC without achieving anything, so skipping to the finale with the noose would fit.

Will prob see Arya get on the boat, Tywin/Shae get popped and a bit about Bran

Not sure what they'll do with Dany

Maybe see Sam/Gilly/Aemon head off to Braavos too next week. THough that doesn't happen until they've captured Mance and his baby.

Either way it is the high watermark in the narrative thusfar. The show will be tested to the limit to match it in the coming years.

I know what you mean; the stories slow down a lot in books 4 and 5 (only 250 pages through five though). Tyrion in Essos is slow going, events at the Wall quiet, Kings Landing relatively low key, bar Cersei's ordeal, Dorne/Iron isles less interesting. They need a few big scenes really or some high profile deaths for the TV.

They also need GRRM to churn out another tome.
