So were Utd actually good in beating Real Madrid, or was it more the result of it being a friendly where some weren't trying as hard as they might for a real competition?

It's pre season, no reason to get over excited. Didn't see the Madrid game but the change in formation seems to suit the CB's.

I do think fans, players alike are getting a bit over excited about pre season games though.

Hey even Ashley Young is playing well as a wing back.

Again only pre season but Herrera looks a great signing.

Thanks guys. :)

I've been following a Manchester United thread on The Student Room through the Summer, however, and they say they've been playing brilliantly, especially Ashley Young at LWB, surprisingly. I also watched a bit of the Roma game and they looked really good.

That's reminding me of the great pre-season that Stuart Downing had for Liverpool a few years back. :P

Definitely going to need one or two CBs to come in though if you continue to play three at the back. Sounds like Vermaelen may be more likely to go to Barcelona instead, now.

Excluding penatlies on Saturday, West Ham scored just 4 goals in pre season.

I really like this new exciting brand of attacking football :D

I'll love it if it gets rid of Allardyce!

Did I mention I can't stand Allardyce?

Not seen any proper quotes but have seen a headline that suggests Pardew thinks Newcastle should be challenging for a European place this season?

Said this in the Newcastle Journal:

“It is very difficult for the likes of the teams outside of the Champions League money to compete. But we are trying to do it in an educated manner.”

“We have been accused of not spending the money we’ve brought in, but now we have spent it and we can hope to get as close as we can. Certainly, offensively we are definitely stronger. There is no doubt about that.”

I don't really think he's going OTT with our goals. Just a goal to compete and try and get close.

Oh I know. But they don't often move from local rag to national newspaper/bbc etc unless there's fuck all else that's newsworthy.

There's usually some. Just the fact it's Newcastle rather than a bigger club shows HOW desperate they are for stories.

I hope Newcastle do well this season; they've made some good signings. Reckon they'll finish 8th.

I'd be happy with 8th. I'd love a cup run but some performances and a top half finish is what I want. Really excited about Siem De Jong, the rest of the signings I think are fairly good but I'm a bit wary of being too optimistic over.

Yeah De Jong looks a top player. I think it'll be the usual top 7 then you guys and Stoke. Burnley, Leicester and West Brom to go down, and got knows about the rest, they'll all just merge into one group and each set of fans will be convinced they're going down until they're safe.

I like to think we're the best of the rest, but most fans tend to exaggerate the sense around the club. I think we've got too many new signings tbh. We needed them but it's a lot at one time and we lack a proven goalscorer.

West Brom have made some interesting signings that might work out, but yet another new manager there and no stability around the club. And they're operating on a much lower budget than other clubs who've spent less time in the Prem recently. I look at who could go down and think there's very few clubs who you'd be incredibly confident don't but not really standout candidates apart from Burnley. Leicester are an obvious shout but I think they're in with much more of a chance of survival than Burnley.
