Do a few festivals including subbing Glastonbury to get back into the public's consciousness, release album later in the year, headline R&L 2016.

They're in the public consciousness. Theyre coming to the end of an album tour and are headlining a major festival next month. No wonder everyone calls it a hiatus whenever a band has a break to write music now.

They are now, but after a year away they'd be more in the public consciousness playing a few festivals than they would without playing them... I'm not saying they'll be forgotten about, but playing festivals and showcasing a few new tunes will increase interest in their upcoming material, obviously...

Headlining Bestival this year will be completely irrelevant to how eagerly people are awaiting new material from them in over a year's time.

Yeah that's if they have new material ready to go next summer, which I'm saying they won't have. They've just come off a two year tour and said they'll have some time off then begin writing, and the album's undoubtedly gonna be the most crucial of their career so why tour to promote an album while they're writing it? They've already made it fairly big and have a huge fanbase now; they don't need to keep playing to stay in people's thoughts anymore.

For a moment I thought you were thrusting Rush in to the equation, I'll admit it took me by a surprise

Same here !

But that would be a bigger shock than U2 , Metallica or AC/DC

Foals headlining Glastonbury and finishing with Two steps twice would definitely be something to remember, but I agree that they need to release a new album or at least 2-3 new songs first :)

Arctic Monkeys headlined when they only had released R U Mine and Do I wanna know, if I remember correctly, from the forthcoming album, and that worked out nicely.

Foals aren't (and won't for a while) be on the same level as Arctic Monkeys when they headlined though (both in '07 and '13) so it's not really comparable

can't see Foals making the jump up to headliner just yet. think they'd definitely need a new album out at the time of them playing, and even then it'd seem like a bit of a push unless that album is huge

There are a indie few bands that I really like and would hoped they would be now ready for The Pyramid

White Lies being one. They did really well at Glasto in 2009 on the back of To Lose My Life but much as I love them they have gone backwards.

I saw them this year and i felt that in 09 they had spent £10k on production and £100 this year , - ie an enlarged black and white photo copy of their new album cover as a back drop.

Muse , Arctics , Kasabian - they have made it , but I am struggling to think of where the next uk guitar head liner will come from.

Personally I hope to see Toy there in a few years giving us 2 hours of Kraut Rock and pyscadellica

I always thought White Lies were on the up also, but something went wrong with the marketing etc of album #3. I thought it was decent.

The Vaccines are probably going to headline one day, but I suspect Foals will beat them to it.

I know they are American, but if the Gaslight Anthem could propel themselves up with their next album, they could "Do a Kings of Leon" and headline.

It came out yesterday. I read a couple of reviews and it's apparently designed for the stadium appeal so I guess they may already have done. Royal Blood may be another UK guitar band headliner if they ride this wave of hype properly. This thread has a lot of that discussion on it.

On the 2015 matter, I see Biffy have announced a few album shows to 'mark the end of the second chapter' of Biffy Clyro so it's a lot less likely they'll be around next summer but I suppose you never know with them.

The Gaslight Anthem? No chance. Their popularity peaked with The 59 Sound & American Slang, and even when they were big, they were never 'future headliner' big.

For a mid afternoon slot, their production was pretty standard really, but yeah, popularity wise they seemed to have dropped off a bit. Shame as I thought their performance was great, and BIG TV is my favourite album.

Editors are a great example of a popular indie band who I was sure would headline major UK festivals one day. Their first 3 albums were great, they headlined Rock Werchter & other smaller festivals, hit singles, wide fanbase... then they seemed to just disappear off people's radar completely. They lost a bit of their trademark sound when Chris left, but are still impressive live. It pained me to see them below the likes of Lumineers last year.

I dunno, there are plenty of bands who seemed like they was going push up to the next "level" when they finished touring an album, took a year or two out and everyone had lost intrest already. People don't have the patience anymore to wait for a really good album and I reckon Foals are exactly one of those bands who if they don't keep in the casual fans mind, will be forgotten about.

Which is one of the reasons, I can't really agree when people moan about bands needing to take time away for a year or so because their bored of them :P

exactly what London Tom says, there's a really clear divide between those bands whose next album builds on previous work to propel them forward to the next level, and those bands who have established themselves and the return after a few years break and the associated album will be 'highly anticipated' and a way for them to comeback and do the gigs they want, confident that people will snap all the tickets up.

I can't quite identify what makes the difference, but it's definitely there. and if you're the former type of band, it has to be calculated really carefully, you leave it too long and you'll be met with a massive shrug of indifference, but keep releasing stuff and touring every year and you'll become ubiquitous and never really make that leap.

you know, I've been thinking, they get a lot of shit for being posh boys, but that last Vaccines album is fucking tremendous guitar pop. One more big album and they've definitely got the back catalogue to do it.

Mardy I don't think I've ever been as disappointed with a post on this website.

I thought I knew you and you go and do that to me......

*slopes off to hug himself and sob quietly in the corner*

Sorry mate, I know I'd only let you down sooner or later. Not just you, I've let myself down, the site down, I dunno what to say...

That's where I believe Foals would fall down. Are people gonna be happy to see them headline R+L/Glastonbury if they'd subbed the other festival the year prior with two new songs? If you look at The Black Keys this year a lot of people had them tipped to headline major festivals next year but then they subbed at Glastonbury and it'd be met generally with disappointment if they headlined somewhere next summer.

And we're not talking about Chinese Democracy here, I imagine the album would drop early 2016 with a brief tour beforehand if they started work on it in the upcoming winter or spring, and they'd be ready to headline both.

Actually, you know what, I stand by what I say, there's no depth to it, and it doesn't pretend otherwise, and sure, it's not going to change my life or anything, but fuck me, it's really really good in the style of classic guitar pop bands like The Only Ones,. I really genuinely like that album. Gets into your head and stays there. Not pretending to alter the world, not deep meaningful art but none the worse for that. I'd rather have them headlining than pretty much anybody who's topped the bill in the last few years. At least I don't actively dislike them.

Have you seen them live, though, Mardy? Had the misfortune to do so twice, second time supporting the Stones so was a captive audience. So, so dull.

Nothing against pop music for pop music's sake but it should at least be entertaining.

Ah, right, Only time I've seen them was last year's(?) Glastonbury, was a perfectly pleasant 45 minutes on a sunny afternoon with a pint in my hand. I enjoyed it. No more no less.

I agree on The Vaccines. They get a lot of flak for their dull repetitive chorus ridden songs from their debut being everywhere and then being unavoidable for the next couple of summers but it worked for them and they managed to put out a decent album on their second attempt, alienating the bouncing chorus fans, and said they're gonna work towards something a lot like the latest EP they put out which wasn't bad either. I have to describe them as 'decent' and 'not bad' because as said, it's not the most inspiring thing and I wouldn't rush to buy tickets at their shows either but if they end up headlining festivals I can abide that.
