Fleetwood Mac, Madonna, Elton John, AC/DC, The Eagles, Mariah, Prince, Dylan, Cher, Barry White, Kate Bush.. they could get Rod Stewart or Bowie back... there are more than enough 'legends' still around to take Glasto up to the 50th and beyond if they push the boat out.

things are even bleaker than I thought

Pithy. Dodging the question, but it was pithy. :P It's not our fault you chose Doves over Neil Young.

I dont regret it!

But most of that list he posted was appalling. Mariah carey? cher? rod stewart??

bob dylan is finished, bowie will never play live again. Madonna is just horrible. Noone was excited when the eagles were rumoured last year, barry gibb is surely nowhere near a headliner.

I'll give him prince though.

Nah, I do agree his list was mostly shocking. Personally I'd be happier for the festival to move away from trying to scrape the barrel of 'heritage' acts (whatever that even term even means.)

But if a higher quality, less mainstream Pyramid means less punters and therefore a forced scaling back of the rest of the festival, then I'm happy to let it stay as it is. You can always just go to another stage, and the likes of Foals are far from the worst that could top the bill.

The festival always used to be about booking current talent to headline, and that's when the festival was apparently better, so I don't agree you need heritage acts to balance it out. In fact I'd prefer a return to them having older acts dispersed across the bill and a current crop taking the Pyramid headline slot but that's just not how it's geared nowadays I guess.

Travis headlined the same year that Bowie did. It wasn't like Bowie played all three nights in a row.

This. Exactly this. Travis, Skunk Anansie, Shakespear's Sister, there's a whole pile of ropey headliners from the archives. No different to now. In fact, I'd take the modern names mentioned in this thread over that pile of shit. I'd take a Two Door Cinema Club or Foals (who I presonally don't really have much time for) over fucking AC/DC or Fleetwood mac (both of whom I actively despise)

Chuck Foo Fighters in there as well. They're in a good position as well. They can be seen as both a legendary band, AND a fresh band... Never headlined Glasto before, and still releasing new, solid music.

I honestly think that it might be a case of looking in places other than rack bands for headliners... There's plenty of acts on the planet big enough to headline, it's just a case of being more open to a change of genre (such as Metallica this year, or Beyonce in 2011 or Jay Z in 2008).

Look at the size of acts outside of bands that haven't headlined Glasto:

Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Eminem, Bruno Mars, One Direction, Justin Timberlake, Drake, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams

I'm not saying make it a pop festival, but the festival may need to make it more open to having more chart artists headlining to keep the headline slot there as important as it has been before...

Exactly.

If the rock music of today isn't appreciated, that's who you'll be left with. Bruno Mars.

Hey, Bruno has some fairly decent pop songs... I'm not saying I'd throw a party if he headlined, but I don't think I'd moan, provided there was some other strong artists about.

Another point, people say about how the festival used to support new bands... You've got to remember that at that time, there wasn't really an legends/heritage acts about, like we have now... They WERE the new bands!

If I was Eavis, I'd split it up... One chart artist, one current band and one "classic act"

If the headliners were something like Kanye West-The Vaccines-AC/DC, I'd say they'd have done a damn good job there. Covered a lot of ground, still got big artists, and they've moved with the times, as well as crowd pleasing.

Good points, well made. Logical, reasonable and articulate.

Expect a lot of downvotes.

I was more on about the 90's where they were promoting almost all current acts to the slot while the likes of Dylan, Cash, Van Morrison and Sting were playing earlier in the day on Pyramid.

And I don't see a necessity for chart artists; chart sales and live sales are separate beasts and even the ones like One Direction who sell their live shows well aren't likely to attract a crowd of regular Glastonbury goers at their gigs so what's the need? Some acts you mention like Gaga and Kanye have a broad appeal and could headline Glastonbury happily but I'd say some like Bruno Mars and Katy Perry don't.

Christ, most of those don't even "sing" live let alone before we get to what utter utter tripe they produce.

Thankfully, the festival is still mostly not a hotel close by type affair and it will fail to attract the sorts who like that sort of thing.

First the vaccines, now this?! :P

Wow, incredible scenes in here today. Whoever said Bruno Mars has decent pop songs needs to have a good look at themselves in the mirror, disgraceful stuff !

At least if some of that dross like Bruno Mars or Katy Perry did headline it would def give me the excuse of not seeing a headliner and heading elsewhere like the SE corner early on, thats the only comfort I could take from the Eavis' loosing their minds and booking dung like that.
