Back to work, so I can't quote again!

I've always liked a bit of driving prog.

And it's good to get off the Ipod thing for a while, my jog wheel has never seen so much activity.....

Plus, a question.

Does it appear to everyone else that they are the only person logged on to this thread?

How about a new game (which doesn't require an iPod)? I've always had a fondness for 'concept' albums, which tell a developing story. Among my favourites are

Several by Pink Floyd

'Clutching at straws' and 'Brave' by Marillion

'A grand don't come for free' by The Streets

'Yoshimi battles the pink robots' by Flaming Lips

Anyone have any suggestions?

Well, Mr G

Given that my formative years were spent listening to a lot of prog, I am no stranger to the concept album.

However, given your choices above, I'm surprised that you didn't include Marillion's 'Misplaced Childhood' too!

For me, ultimate would have to be Genesis' 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway', which would still probably make my 5 desert island albums...

there are more good coffee shops than bad if you stick around the touristy areas, which you probably will if it's your first visit. your hostel should have the best advice on that front. prices are steep, but it's a novelty to buy and smoke 'legally', and a good shop will have a menu of different weeds and hash, usually space cakes and sometimes mushrooms too.

first time in the dam, do the obvious. get stoned, wander round museums if it's cold, or the parks if it's nice out. see the red light district. it's a picturesque place.

i like the coffee shop culture - it's a bit like pub culture. they come in many shapes and sizes, some are more welcoming than others, some have better produce etc etc.. they'll be full of tourists like yourself and everyone speaks english.

after 'coffee' i like a nice hot chocolate from the place in dam square, just accross from the royal palace.

it's a great city, not too big either, more manchester sized than london so easy to get around.

Hope it lives up to your description, going to try and not stay in the coffee shops all the time. The only thing we've planned thus far is to go to the Rijkmuseum after taking truffles and to try to find the 16% version of Oranjeboom.

Is it a 24 hour city? could I go out at 4am and visit a coffee shop or do they shut at a certain time?

What are the beer prices like?

CokeyB - Look out the Get Lost Guide to Amsterdam

Ordered it, cheers for the tip looks like a decent read.

Go to Anne Frank's House. Everyone should go there at least once in their life.

Think that's on the agenda, It's a must see for me but my mates are not that bothered so I'll have to try and convince them.

Misplaced Childhood was my introduction to Marillion, thanks to the big hit singles, and I do still like it, but I felt Clutching at Straws told a more interesting story. Several years later I saw an interview with Steve Hogarth relating the news story he'd heard which led to writing 'Brave'. Thought it was a fantastic source of inspiration.

'Lamb lies down' is another great one!
