Unfortunately, if their music is actually good, they have been subject to some prejudgement from me, a grunge, industrial, metal-head. Possibly because they have been associated with the dull-as-dishwater indie 'gang' and that my sister, who has a far less energetic music taste than me, said that their 2013 set was boring.

Fair enough - if i were to judge recent metal bands i'd probably group acts together that you would be able to differentiate between much better... and i completely agree they were boring in 2013 :-)

I don't think BBC deserve to be lumped in as indie-tripe either. They're more creative than that.

Oh they do, (their massive twats...I can't remember why but i was starting to quite like them and then said something really shity in an article and I've gone off them)...their of very similar ilk. its just people for some strange reason don't like to admit they like an "indie band" even though the term is fairly vague and useless. The Cribs' fans also do this, strange!

People actually care what Pitchfork have to say?

Only by people who insist you only dislike an act cause you are following what they/the hipster/the real music fans say :P

I'd like to see them headline the Pyramid actually just to see the reaction of the real music fans. :blum:

The Taylor Swift fans? :P

Well I'm a fan of both bands (I'm from Wakefield so I have to like the Cribs, it's all we've got) but I wouldn't say either of them weren't indie. Of course they're indie, for all that means these days. They're both interesting bands though, BBC for their musical creativity and general songwriting talent, Cribs for their energy, DIY ethic and things like feminism-related lyrics.

I'd be interested to hear what BBC said in that interview, though.

Do The Cribs fans do this? I've never seen them do so...

I mean I love The Cribs, but I've never seen them as any more than a standard indie band. They do have quite a hipster fanbase, but I think most fans just take them as a decent indie band.

I've also never liked BBC, but I listened to the most recent album after the Mercury Prize nomination and enjoyed it very much.

TDCC are an absolute abomination, though.

what do people feel the need to like a band just because they are from the same area? Never really understood that.

people from the north are terrible for it.

I agree. I'm from just north of Manchester. There is a massive demographic who just listen to Manchester bands and nothing much else... Maybe Kasabian and when they are really pushing the boat out - The Jam.

I do like Oasis, the Smiths and The stone roses, but I can't stand the Courteeners (my most local band). Not 19 forever is appalling and seems to be some sort of anthem for the 5th Ave / 42's crowd.

- Lisa Stansfield went to my school, thats as famous as it gets for us

I'm sure there's somebody on here who is the epitome of what you're describing? He thought James should be given the chance to headline the Pyramid?

I have to disagree with you there. Manchester has traditionally been exceptionally welcoming to music from elsewhere. Hence why Northern Soul exploded up here when it was not even popular in the area it was produced. Also why the punk bands got gigs here when no one else would tolerate them and also why acid house took over when most of the country was still quaffing shit white wine and listening to Sade.

I agree with the Courteeners, they seem to have a huge following up here without actually achieving much. But that can be attributed to the southern Manchester and student bias in the local media. Thats why bands like Puressence never got the credit they deserved.

But for the most parts, from the Buzzcocks to Oasis Manchester produced some great music makers in all genres. So its no shock local people got behind local bands.
