I agree. I'm from just north of Manchester. There is a massive demographic who just listen to Manchester bands and nothing much else... Maybe Kasabian and when they are really pushing the boat out - The Jam.

I do like Oasis, the Smiths and The stone roses, but I can't stand the Courteeners (my most local band). Not 19 forever is appalling and seems to be some sort of anthem for the 5th Ave / 42's crowd.

- Lisa Stansfield went to my school, thats as famous as it gets for us

I know this is going back a few pages but:

The courteeners have just sold out 70,000 at Heaton park apparently!! I bet they wouldn't sell 20,000 outside of Manchester

For some reason it is only 20,000 capacity.

Still to sell out in 3 hours is quite impressive

That's probably what is happening. They'll most likely just use the main stage from Parklife?

Would make sense why the capacity is limited, if thats the main stage capacity for parklife (no idea how big parklife is tbh).

I dont get why they dont just do manchester arena though, its got an extra 1000 capacity and probably requires much less setting up, even if theyre just using the parklife stage.

Probably so they can say they sold out Heaten Park

I thought the news of a Bloc Party album coming was just a misinterpretation of Kele talking about his upcoming solo album (when it was upcoming), or something like that?

I remember when I looked into it I couldn't find anything about a new Bloc Party album.

Could be mistaken.

For me now, the biggest thrill when I DJ is to look out into the crowds and watch people get lost in their own worlds to the backdrop of my music. The real test for me now as we start preparing the fifth Bloc Party record, is how can I take what I have learned from this world and bring it into another? How can I cross-pollinate? I'm not talking about recycling sounds—that would be reductive and crude. I'm talking about the experience. How can I make something so personal and transcendental translate in the world of indie rock, and is it even possible? I don't know, but therein lies the challenge, and thats a challenge I am excited to undertake.

Wiki has this as the sauce, which is fairly ambigous tbh.

I know you're across the water and all, but if I can live in Stockport and claim The Stone Roses, New Order and Elbow etc, then you can bloody well claim The Beatle s!

You have Northern Uproar. Tragic what happened to the guitar player. I went to watch them a few times in the mid 90's and they were always good fun.

Been saying it for a couple years now, electronic music needs a dedicated outdoor stage at the festival to accommodate acts not quite popular enough for the Other Stage but big enough to seriously overcrowd Sonic Stage to the point of either being crushed to death, not being able to hear the music or just as bad, being stuck between Blues, Gully and Sonic with some terrible soundbleed.

Agreed

Trying to find enough "electronic" acts to fill such a stage would be very difficult I reckon.

True and it would either needs to be open late (which probably means the se corner or restricted sound) or it would be dead for most of the time (electronic music on a big stage outdoors in daylight roesn't really work). I think an occasional dance headliner on west holts and or park is probably the closest we're going to get. Both are great stages but their vibes are a bit different...

It's a shame though, and it's why the chemical brothers have headlined the other the last three times they've played... which is getting a bit predictable.

Why do people think Aphex Twin isnt big enough or right for The Other Stage? I'm surprised

I think a lot of people would check it out because they recognise his name and leave quite quickly. I think he'd briefly pack out the West Holts field but it would quickly become comfortable but filled.

I saw him at the Leisure Lounge in the early 90s. An hour of 12 inch sized sandpaper on the turntable.

Genius.
