Future headliners

Most bands in this thread have gone as far as they'll ever go. Where are all these Ellie Goulding fans going to come from to facilitate her being headline size? Anybody that was ever going to give her a listen has already done it. And she's hardly got an exciting live reputation to back her up, V would give her a go way before Glastonbury, and I don't think they're going to for a while.

Foals are a bit like Arcade Fire, they've steadily been gaining momentum and got a good live reputation, but they don't have anywhere near the amount of big crowd friendly songs that AF do. A lot of Arcade Fire's success comes from the more that they're mentioned, the more people go back and listen to Funeral and become instant converts, that album is so massive in scope, it sounds like the anthemic record that bands who headline festivals and play to big crowds would make, no Foals album has anything like that sort of power. All of Arcade Fire's records continue in pretty much the same trend, they make big songs, and they've got worldwide success and a Best Album Grammy. Foals could get to their level if they put out another few albums like Holy Fire that really take off, but Antidotes is frantic music for small sweaty venues, and Total Life Forever is a bit weird. Foals might just peak at being indie heroes and mid-size festival headliners.

Agree with all of that, they sounded like a festival-headlining band from the very beginning.

I’ve wondered why Vampire Weekend haven’t made the step up, as they’re surely more mainstream popular than Arcade Fire? But I guess it’s kind of the same with them, they just don’t quite sound right, not ‘big’ enough. Although I also think their latest album was a step in the right direction, if that’s what they’re going for.

They're gonna bring out an Only By the Night to seal the deal.

To be honest though, I'm speaking about headliners of major festivals in general. Foals could possibly never headline Glastonbury but I'd certainly wager that they'll headline R+L.

That isn't headline sized already I can see very few that are around right now. Foals, Florence, Disclosure and Royal Blood are the surefire ones. Perhaps Sheeran, Bugg, Vaccines, Rudimental, Bastille and The 1975 if they carry on their upward trajectories but in the musical climate that's uncertain I could only see a maximum of two of those reaching the heights. Royal Blood's rise suggests that there can be bands that we don't know about now but this time next year they could be the next huge thing so it's not necessarily a problem.

I don't really see the likes of Bombay or The National reaching the top so many albums in. There's a cutoff point where bands seem to get overlooked unless they completely sell out. HAIM would surprise me too as their album release after summer offered zero growth and were just playing the same type of slots as last year pre-album. They'd have to branch out a lot.

It depends as headliners what stage we are talking about if any? London Grammar headlined the JP this year and i didn't think they'd handle it, but how i was wrong looking back, though it's hard to think where they'd go from here becuase surely thats thier venue, personally i don't think the XX pulled it off last year, BUT London Grammar are by far better , time will tell.

Personally for the future i reckon Lorde will headline the JP NEXT year.

I think Bombay Bicycle Club could make it to Other stage headliner. They've got four quality, very different albums. Their latest album has been more commercially accessible and successful.

I saw them at Benicassim at the normal headliner slot (1am) two years ago (because Bob Dylan was "headliner" but wanted to play at 9pm) and they absolutely nailed it, and that was pre so long, see you tomorrow.

The only person at the moment who I think has something special about her and think will be huge in the future is St Vincent. She's got it all really, great guitar player and stage presence and judging by her interviews I think she knows she's going to be big and has a vision.

She's already brought out four high quality albums, two of them albums of the year and I think in the future will make a few more hit singles and radio's will get on the bandwagon.
