I quite like Dead Inside musically, although im not sure its what I want from Muse at this point. Reminds me a bit of NIN actually. Good groove.

Matts cheesy vocals and lyrics once again threaten to ruin the whole thing though.

So reading Matt's comments about Dead Inside and the rest of the album it sounds a bit like a concept album.

Maybe Dead Inside is meant to sound like the recent stuff before it goes heavy as he alludes that the protagonist of the album going through a change.

I quite liked Undisclosed Desires/Madness...but this....this is just shite,an actual wtf.

I've listened to a few times and on the radio this morning, its just horrible (mostly, there are parts where I thought it might turn into decent song.)

Its down there with NSE/Guilding Light for me. I hope its just them being lazy and they had something left other from The 2nd Law that they could fit on this one.

I don't think the songs are bad but I think they could have fitted on the last two albums. I really don't like the direction they've gone, they're starting to sound like everyone else because they've experiments with the dance groove crap which got tired very quickly. The lyrics are a big problem, Matt's trying to write political lyrics but in a pop way which sounds like boys writing their first song at college. I think Matts trying to be ironic but the lyrics are just bad, I think bands like RATM and SOAD are a big influence for lyrics but the quality of their lyric writing is much better by not being more abstract and poetic about their subjects. Dead Inside actually sounds more like a love song to me.

It proves more that Muse are just a live band, the only two albums I'd listen to is OoS and Hullabaloo. I still enjoy the b sides more as well like dead star, fury, futurism, Assassin Omega boss edit, host etc

Honestly the only thing keeping me listening to Muse is the bizarre blurring between what's meant to be silly in a humorous way and what's actually meant to be taken seriously. That made The 2nd Law a fascinating album despite being dreadful in just about every way. The mass of bad decisions on that album just collapsed in on itself to make it hilarious. I appreciate that they're trying to make something more focused again but I fear that it might result in it just being boring rather than having the 'so bad it's good' appeal that their last one had.

imo this definitely sounds like the best of the songs so far (although still not terrific). unless the rest of the album is totally stripped down rock then they must've had a change of heart over the whole 'heavy' thing mid-way through and just decided to roll with it regardless

Yeah it's my favourite so far.

From what I've seen most uses of "dark"/"heavy" have been relating to the content rather than the music, but of course it's weird to have that coupled with the style of these songs.

Seems like what they're promising is dark songs which are stripped back, although synths still seem prominent, and we know they've been recording strings, so they're probably bullshitting again.

I like the return of the arpeggios on this. Chorus definitely sounds like Stockholm Syndrome, musically.

Mental that we heard it at all though.

I remember him giving a speech like "This one should've been on Absolution, it's one of those bonus tracks you love" or something and I was like "YES FURY". Then The Groove started and I was like "Oh my GOD what", but then realised we weren't gonna get Fury and was sad.

And then they opened the encore with Fury. Unreal scenes.
