who/what is DiY?

DiY is a group of DJs that came to fruition during the free party scene of the early 90s. Consisting of Jack, DK, Pip, Digs, Woosh and others. They were prominent at the infamous Castlemorton party and had links to the travelling community around that time. After the criminal justice bill (to which they were obviously fiercely opposed to) landed in 94, you'd find them in clubs. Sadly, some of those I've mentioned recently passed away. I particularly loved Jack and Digs & Woosh's (usually played b2b - the first duo I can ever remember seeing) brand of tribal house and hypnotic techno and I'm very much hoping that's what we get on Genosys. Fully expect some of the old guard to be out in force for that one too. Search for DIY Jack or Digs & Woosh on SoundCloud and you'll see what they're about.

So is that every dance lineup out now? Except Greenpeace?

I really had my hopes of Marlon Hoffstadt being on the farm, really thought this was his year... Guessing the UK bookers haven't got him high on their lists 😔

Would be perfect timing with his first Essential Mix out now

prime San Remo pick that i reckon

A question for you E&D ers - how much of your dancing time (if any) do you spend solo?

For live acts, I'm always very happy to go off and do my own thing for a bit, but late night tends to be together. There's only two of us this year so I may be left to my own devices after they retire for the evening, but still want to catch some of the late night offering. My current strategy is just to get down the front where all the energy is and away from the big groups falling around the place on the edges. But any tips appreciated.

I’m gonna be in a similar situation this year as electronic music, especially the late night stuff, is a tough sell to the guy I’m going with. He might stick around for a bit, but he’s definitely not doing three hour long techno sessions at Arcadia. My plan is like yours - just continue on and get in to the thick of it. One positive is way easier to worm your way to a good spot if you’re on your own.

I'd say around 50% of my entire Glastonbury is solo and after hours even more so. If there's someone I'm dead set on seeing, you're either coming with, or not. I rarely compromise if there's a must-see and I encourage my friends to be the same. Glastonbury time is super-finite. And when I get to where I need to be, I follow my nose, seek out the place with good energy (lots of smiles, people dancing, zero daisy-chaining through the crowd - a pet hate of modern dancefloors) and plant my feet. It's usually where the best sound is, too. There's nowhere better to be anonymous but surrounded by like-minded souls than a good dancefloor. See you there.

For me it's some solo but lots with others. However, this year will be a bit different as my main rave buddies from our group aren't going. But, I'm lucky in knowing a fair few people from over the years, so will often meet someone on a dancefloor.

We have semi-arranged meet-ups from this thread in the past, with, predictably, varying success 🤪. Best laid plans, and all that! But, I reckon we'll try to do that again this year. We've previously tried to target maybe one set a day, daytime or night, and I have met up with others and it's been really great.

There's also an E/D WhatsApp group, coordinated from here and the other place that I mute the rest of the year (😂), but can be good to see if anyone else is at/heading to a set you're at/going to.

I'm always happy to share my number with people in the thread, and would always try to respond if someone pinged me a message looking for a dancefloor buddy for a set, so anyone can DM me etc.

Once the full line-up drops, the regulars in here will start to post their plans for the days (not me, I'm just not a daytime dancer) and the nights, and people can maybe identify sets where they might be able to hook up.

If you want me, I'm always in the same position, whenever possible. And love it when people come up to say hi. It really is all about the communal experience.

Look out for the guy with glasses, WARP Records T-shirt, bags of energy, big smile and in the scientifically-optimal position for audio quality. That's Ben.

Oh the irony! That's about the only record label T-shirt I don't have 😂. I did buy one for Child 3, of course!

I'll be almost completely solo this year. Been about 40% solo last two years, mixed response. 2022 I met two strangers at Four Tet and we went on a all night side quest showing a first timer the whole site, finishing off dancing at Iicon til sunrise. Magical.

Last year didn't have such luck and overheard one group I got chatting to in Shangri-La say to one another "we don't wanna be looking after her all night" so quickly excused myself and kept myself to myself after that.

Hoping for more of the former this year as, other than my worker friends, I don't have any other good mates there this year for the first time ever.

That sucks to hear. Unless you're a liability, aggressive or an incoherent dribbling mess, come on in, I say. Some of my favourite hours at the festival have been hanging and dancing with strangers, only to go separate ways and never see each other again afterwards. It's like having a best friend for three hours. Hope you bump into kinder people this year.

Yeh it was weird coz it's not particularly something I've come across at glasto before, and I was definitely coherent at that point, but idk I guess I just wasn't their vibe and one or two of them were being polite carrying on the conversation when the rest of the group didn't want it. It's cool it just stung a little as it does remind you you're alone.

Trust me, they were the exact opposite of who you wanted to be with. I'm so sorry you met such a miserable bunch! I'm confident that if you met anyone from in here you'd be super welcome and have a fab time 🥰

You are 100% correct. Managed to locate two people from the WhatsApp group for a little dance and a third came to meet me at my bar while I was on shift to say hello last year so definitely not all doom and gloom!

You’re always welcome to meet up with my and my friends.

From the WhatsApp group I think we have pretty similar tastes in dance music, so when the Clashfinder drops we can arrange a meet up if you’d like to.

Excellent tips folks, thanks for sharing. You have reminded me I've actually had many good stints dancing with strangers, including my first ever festival when I spent 80% of my time in the Slam Tent (RIP) solo, taps aff, sober as a judge 😂. I will channel some of that youthful energy and optimism!

If the Slam Tent at TITP was your training ground, you're gonna be just fine. Beast of a tent.

I'm another in the same boat, once the headliners finish most of my group head to the tents so I spend most every night on my own, Generally I love it and kinda wander about the area until the vibe feels right then dance away, the only thing I feel I miss out on is, I just wont que for a venue when alone.
