Can you imagine this outrage if this perm headed ball bag had been announced to play 10 or 15 years ago?? he was absolutely, and rightfully, derided among the sort of people who would be going to glastonbury.

And now he's being hailed as the returning messiah!

I can think of nothing worse than his dreadful soppy ballads and incredibly dated up tempo numbers.

I just cant get my head round this "so bad it's good" mentality that people seem to have, and that will ensure the field is packed out.

The "legend slot" needs to be rebranded as the "naff/novelty slot" immediately.

From james brown, brian wilson, leonard cohen to dolly parton and lionel richie....

I'm pretty lukewarm on him, but in a way he's kind of the last gasp of Motown as a giant force in American music.

It's more or less meaningless that a bunch of students 20 years ago wouldn't have been happy about him playing - the same folk would probably have been like giddy schoolgirls at the prospect of seeing Therapy? or Silverfish.

James Brown was a fiasco, Russ.

Not bad for someone who was on the way out. Died 18 months later.

Was worth it for the dancing at 2 mins 50.

He looks like the zombie Michael Jackson from the Thriller video though. If the zombie Michael Jackson from the Thriller video had have lived until 2004 and played Glasto.

Anyway heres the Beeb Lionel moment next year

Or will it be this?

had never really listened to the Commodores before, just streamed a best of album, their upbeat stuff is pretty funky, but the slower songs make me want to slit my wrists.

Think it depends who he clashes with whether I'll be there or not for his set. I'd been hoping for Elton John for the legends slot. Deep down I always knew it was unlikely, but still disappointed.

I think SEJ was never likely to be on the teatime slot. He's headliner or nowt. Still think he'll headline on Sunday night.

He’s not one of the first names that comes to mind when you think of Motown. To sell him as a ‘Motown legend’ is a bit off.

Looking at those setlists just confirm to me that he mostly purveys in 80’s naffness that I’d not go anywhere near otherwise. Hello is an awful song, as is Dancing on the Ceiling. Easy is the only one that I’d not switch off infact.

I’m not normally arsed about bookings that aren’t my cup of tea as there’s plenty of other stuff to be getting on with but the more I think about this one, the more it annoys me.

i do agree with you. things change. take Fleetwood Mac even. Can you imagine 10-15 years ago (which is even closer to their prime) people going on about them for 2 years in a row now about being Saturday headliner?! they were generally an afternoon pyramid suggestion...some even thinking they might have been the pre-Springsteen act in '09...

mind you, i'm not putting Fleetwood Mac into Lionel Richie category, but it's amazing how some of these acts get their 9th lives...until a few recent tv commercials (and a few mentions on efests 'legends'' threads) i wasn't even sure if Lionel Richie was still alive

James Brown was a fiasco, Russ.

but he was dead by Christmas time 2 years later, so it was one of the last 'big' gigs he played if you caught it, even if he was no more than a foreground dancer...

I'm fairly sure that Can't Slow Down is the biggest selling album that Motown ever released.

i'm fairly sure that a significant amount of those sales were to kids with no idea that he was ever in the Commodores too, or who they were either....

'Legends Slot' is just such a valuable place on the lineup, and with Kenny Rogers and now Lionel Richie in 2 of 3 years, I just think it's really gettign away from what it could be...a lineup spot with just as much prestige if not more than the headliners (especially given the sparcity of headliners left to feature at Glasto) of the best rock festival on the planet.

Lionel Richie.........

I agree with you, and you're spot on about fleetwood mac. The same happened with Abba the other year when they were rumoured to be making a come back.

Abba! at glastonbury! Unthinkable a few years back.

There is also a sizeable number of people who would like to see take that headline. Imagine that being suggested in 1995! It's not like they've got better.

Awful.

There are so many people that could take that legends slot and we get this cheese-ball..It's embarrassing.
