I'm fairly sure that Can't Slow Down is the biggest selling album that Motown ever released.

20 million sales apparently, and the album stayed the whole of 1984 in the Billboard Top 10, two #1 singles, total of 5 top ten singles....can't believe I'm defending him as I used to hate him, but I don't see why Dolly gets huge praise and huge crowd with total cheesy 'I Will Always Love You' and he gets hammered!

I don't really see how Dolly is any less cheesy or any more credibly than Kenny or Lionel Richie to be honest.

I was talking to a colleague at work last night, and we got to talking about the philly-soul stuff, and I was saying how limp it was (for me) - soul music without any soul. That's what The Commodores are to me.

Nah - not having that. It can maybe get a bit too over-smooth at points, but O'Jays tunes like Ship Ahoy or Backstabbers ooze with soul. Plenty of treasure to be uncovered on this here box set:

Get some Me and Mrs. Jones all up in yer grill.

She's not.

And you can add Shirley Bassey, Neil Diamond, Tom Jones, and quite a few others to that list. This slot has often (successfully) embraced campier/cheesier artists over the years, and anyone trying to pretend otherwise is pretty much full of it.

as long as he comes on to Machine Gun, it's all good.

Some proper miserable bastards on here, makes me laugh. He was so crap in the 80s he sold over 100m records, excluding his stint in The Commodores. Might not be your thang, but it is simply ignorant and stubborn to deny his legendary status in the music world.
