Netherlands Festivals 2015: PinkPop, Best Kept Secret, Down The Rabbit Hole

I would assume IOW is Isle of Wight.

I've been to Pinkpop a few times and it's a decent little festival. I lived in the town where the festival is actually held, until moving back to the UK a couple of months ago. Can't help you with the other festivals you mention, but if you have any specific questions on Pinkpop, I might be able to help. Are you travelling from the UK or are you already in NL, if you are only looking at Dutch festivals?

Hey there.

I'm actually going to the Netherlands in June for a little vacation, by myself having just turned 18. I'll be there for the month pretty much. I've always wanted to go to a music festival but given where I live that's out of the question.

Currently I'm looking at going to both Pinkpop & Rock Werchter this June. I'm travelling from Syria.

How was your experience at PinkPop? My friend might not be able to come (most likely) and I don't know how it'll be if I end up going alone. The music is the most important thing after all but I don't know if I like the whole idea of going alone.

i was going on my own at many festivals, f.e. last year 2 days of Rock Werchter or 2 days of Pukkelpop. Always fun, you get to know many people! And you have no discussions about clashes when you can choose on your own.. ;-) I think if you're interested in the music and have your schedule for the days, then you'll like it on your own.

I've been to quite a lot of European festivals and I like Pinkpop. It's not a really big festival, so you can find your way around really easily. Unlike a lot of festivals, they don't have bands on at the same time on the main stage and the second stage, so you can actually see pretty much all the bands, if you don't mind running backwards and forwards between the two stages! Only one of the festival camp sites is right next to the arena where the bands play and you have to get there very early to get a space there. There are two or three more campsites around the town, which can take 10-20 minutes to walk from, to the arena.

The town where the festival is (Landgraaf) isn't a particularly big town, there's not really anything to see or do there, but they have plenty of supermarkets, if you need to buy food or drink, for the campsite. There is a train station in the town and you can get regular trains to and from Maastricht (the Netherlands) or Aachen (Germany), which are quite nearby and are both very nice cities to visit.

I would guess that probably 90% of the people at the festival are Dutch, but most will speak good English (although all the signs on the food and drink stalls are in Dutch). The Dutch people are generally quite friendly and laid back and are usually happy to talk, if you talk to them. They like their beer, but compared to us Brits, they generally don't get too drunk!

That's really awesome, the thing with bands not playing at the same time. how early is early for that campsite?

And food is allowed at PinkPop? I thought you were forced to buy from the inside for whatever reason!

Hahaha that's really great to hear with the Dutch!

I'm not sure how early you would have to get to the campsite, to get in the site nearest to the arena (I lived about 10 minute walk from the arena, so could sleep in my own bed!) but people spend the night out on the road outside, the night before it opens!

Food and drink can be taken onto the campsite, but not into the main arena.
