Lineup 2016

Think they'd go down like a lead balloon for the most part at R+L nowadays

Is there booking really that different to Metallica though? Huge established act with history at the festival, I can't see them being that poorly received? Would love to see the days of the likes of Pearl Jam / Radiohead / Pixies headlining come back, the festival now has so much variety across its stages I don't think it's too far out of the question..

I don't think Metallica are on a level with those bands. They may be an old band but they're still one of the first stops for kids getting into rock music and their massive popularity is why they've been booked so often.

I don't really see much variety either - and Metallica being suggested as an inspired booking probably actually shows the lack of variety.

Fair point.

I have to disagree with this tho, I think the festival is really varied throughout its lineup in recent years, maybe not so much in an outlandish and unexpected headlining booking but I feel across the lineup as a whole there's generally a big enough variety to enable a more divisive headlining booking (with the majority of fest goers) i.e. Radiohead / Arcade Fire.

I remember walking through the site on Friday in 13 and wondering past Deftones, seeing the last 10 minutes of Kate Nash before stumbling past the Dance Stage w/ Iggy Azalea playing before seeing System and then Green Day, obviously that's only one instance I can remember but I can't really see a lack of variety imo.

Ahh fair enough got the wrong end - yeah I think Metallica are a decent booking

it is a bit strange that you managed to see Iggy in 2013 considering she pulled out at the last minute

Did acid during Nathan Flutebox Lee, I probably imagined seeing System and Green Day too! :ninja::P

Now I think about it I do vaguely remember repeatedly kicked during Bangarang by Skrillex.. maybe I didn't see Green Day.. they didn't pull out right??

I don't think A$AP Rocky is anything like sub level.

I know there's been a lot said about the booking of Slipknot in recent years - a lot of it by me - but after that arena tour I think it'd be one of the most sensible headline bookings they could make and as long as they can beat Soni to it then should be pretty easy too.

Thing about calling FATM or Foals 'weak headliners' is it just takes TITP having them headline for them to no longer be considered weak, like Libertines this year.

The only thing stopping Slipknot is that they've done an arena tour plus it'd be 3 in 4 years of English festival headline spots. Without another new album, I'm not sure it's such a credible booking.

Look at Metallica though, played every festival under the sun since there last album came out. I know there's talk about a new album but there doesn't seem to actually be much surfacing?

What Will said, Metallica and Slipknot are miles apart in terms of siE and stature. Metallica still have plenty of time this year to announce something and playing 1/2 new songs would do it.

They were questionable because of stuff like 'they don't have the crossover appeal' and 'they were only 3rd down last time they were booked off the same album' but now it's a new album and it seems they've grown in popularity with a new album and do have a fair bit of crossover appeal. I think they're unquestionably a headliner now.

Anyway, an arena tour and festival doesn't exhaust the demand for them at all. Loads of bands headline R+L after they've already done a big tour and headlined a festival in the previous eighteen months.

Pretty sure he's saying they could get away with playing the fest in a lower slot, but they're not suited enough to headline it. You can probably get away with more acts that aren't quite suitable for the fest lower down, but as headliners there may be a bit too much scrutiny, and they could just go with someone more suitable instead.

Not saying I agree, but if that's what he's saying then I see where he's coming from.

Didn't you say pretty much the same thing about The Pit? There are bands that are suited to it but if they reach headline size they wouldn't play it, and would play a different stage? Was about PABH or Drenge or someone IIRC.

Think it was Drenge.

I understand where the guy's coming from but I don't think Slipknot are an unsuitable headliner. Maybe someone like A7X who are now Download headliners and probably want headline slots, so wouldn't play, and BFMV if they're getting pushed up lineups because Download want them to headline?

Yeah I think Slipknot could headline R&L, but I do think his argument could hold water for some acts. For instance some of us thought that about Mumford. Same with Coldplay.

Slipknot could definitely do it, I thought they'd do it this year until Download snapped them up.

I'd definitely rule out Avenged Sevenfold though; I can't see R&L ever wanting them in as headliners.

Maybe.....:ninja:

However PABH on The Pit would be pretty dope (but I never mentioned them, it was Drenge). However I'd still say that Slipknot are a better fit for headlining the main than Drenge are for subbing The Pit though ;)

But if what he said makes no sense then saying a band is suitable for The Pit but not suitable for headlining it also makes no sense.

Aye. But then again I'm justanothername so expecting me to make sense makes no sense it self.

Also I get what he is on about now (well what we think) as I wasn't sure what he was on about originally
